Hunting reports
Africa

I'm leaving today to start my African hunting trip. To say I am excited and nervous is an understatement. I've waited a year and a half from the time I sent the deposit to @KMG Hunting Safaris. Doing the Atlanta to Joberg route then overnighting in Joberg and on to Port Elizabeth to meet Marius. Any tips to endure a 15 hour flight ? this is my first trip over so any tips, tricks or FYI will be much appreciated.
Thanks

:A Popcorn:really looking forward to your report. You will have a great time with Marius. Get up and walk around on that plane!

try to sleep on the flight, bring ear plugs and i believe they give you a face mask, but bring something to keep the light out in case they don't
Drink lots of water as well and done be shocked when you see the size of your ankles and feet at the end of the flight lol, they swell up pretty good so need to keep that in mind when picking out your footwear for the flight, and if you take them off during the flight, might not fit when you land

Overnighting is a good idea so you can get some rest and start acclimation to a different world/culture. That long flight is a form of torture and I know of no real relief. I always get comfort economy seats and that helps.
I have never had jet lag during the trip but have noticed getting up earlier than anyone else in camp. Jet lag will set in once trip is over and may take a couple of weeks to fully recover. You can start planning your next trip while there :)

Just relax, drink plenty of water on the flight and try to enjoy yourself by thinking about what awaits you once you land. Have a blast, shoot straight, take lots of pics and write a really great report when you get home.

Have fun, shoot straight, and post plenty of pics with that hunt report :D

I hope I can do you all a great report but I'll be at my wife's mercy on the report because she will be doing the typing or it will be a month before I can type it out:).

If you have a chance to pick up compression socks they help. My wife picked up a pair for a flight to Australia. I think they made things more comfortable and, I think, a little safer.

Speaking of feet and footwear on the flight- I always take a pair of camp slippers on these trips. Pack those on top of your stuff in your carry on and wear them during the flight. Much more comfortable and better to walk around in, when allowed, during the flight. Plus lavatory floors get a little "questionable" toward the end of long flights.

Congratulations and I’m sure you’ll have a grand time in Africa.

I do the flight across five times a year, sometimes via Europe, sometimes straight. There is nothing that’s gonna make it great, but acceptable is the goal.
It comes often down to the mindset. It will pass, it will be fine, we’ll have a grand time, don’t sweat the small stuff. All those things works.

Delta usually has some OK movie selection, but a couple of movies on your pad may help out.
Perhaps some Africana related books to read on your pad as well.
Try to sleep, drink water, walk around every so often to minimize the swelling that will undoubtedly be worse by sitting still.
Overnighting in Johannesburg is a grand idea before the flight to PE, gives you more peace of mind to make the connection, with or without going through with rifles etc.
I have at times taken muscle relaxants to ease some of the pain, which may work for some.
A noise cancelling setup, Bose or others is worth a lot, both to get the rest and to drown out the noice when watching a movie or listening to music.
Just in case you do get jet lag, I usually get it bad on the Eastbound trips, have some sleep aid or Melatonin. You can get them easy in Atlanta at the pharmacies, but not so easy in South Africa.

You’ll be fine. :-)

Agree with the previous poster about Africa related book....hunting or early exploration by the English explorers, who were hunters also, usually by necessity!. And hope there is a movie or two that you are interested in!

This is what I like about flying out of a small airport.

Wish you the best !

Stay hydrated and jet lag will be lessened and have fun the addition starts on first trip

Take a book you've been thinking about reading. You can only watch so many movies. I loaded all 5 of Nathan Foster's books on my iPad. If you enjoy reading about what makes a good rifle, the best calibers to use, reloading , long range hunting etc. Nathan's writings have a lot to offer.

My suggestions: takeoff have dinner. Have two bourbons after dinner. Watch two movies and one TV show. Now your about 6 hours outside Atlanta. Try to catch some sleep. I usually can sleep for about six hours. Wake up have breakfast watch a movie and your about ready to land at OR Tambo. Time to enjoy the hunt!
