Having hunted tuskless cows a couple of times, I definitely felt more intimidated by them than anything else I’ve hunted. We never got charged while actually in the field, but we did have one chase us in the truck for quite some distance while trumpeting the whole time. We did have a young bullet push us away from the herd one day. We retreated and he stomped around and pawed at the ground where we had just been standing. Luckily that’s as far as he came though. That’s the time when you’re happy to be holding a 458 and that your PH is holding a 500 Double.
This is making me look forward to this coming April. We’ll be hunting Mateke Hills. I’m told the bulls there are about a third larger in body size than the valley bulls. So that, and the thick cover should make for some existing hunting.

Non trophy. Hopefully an old mature bull with broken off tusks or similar. They tell me this is an excellent area for elephants. Also hunting buffalo if I shoot an elephant first.

Yes, the follow up on a CATLY can certainly be a dangerous experience. I would definitely use soft points on my initial shot. It is a matter of debate whether softs or solids on the next rounds. A great trophy and story at the end of the day.

I was fortunate to hunt with a PH that had the objective to get in and out of every herd without disturbing them. Like Counting Coup. Of course not every stalk worked out that way.


At the beginning of the hunt we got very thorough instructions.
“When I tell you to retreat. turn around and walk fast but do not trip. Don’t look back. Just go.

Well on one particular stalk we found ourselves in very thick brush. And in the herd. The PH gave a quick warning and here she came. He turned and trotted towards my wife and I. We turned and my wife immediately tripped and fell.

I stopped to guard with my rifle and so did the PH. She quickly got up and we ran, Not walked for quite a distance. Very exciting.

We had them chase the truck and had several other cheeky cows on that hunt. It’s a lot of hunt for the money.

I see why people get hooked on elephant hunting.
