Hi there,

Please can I have some help. I’m in Zimbabwe and I have a cleaned and boiled impala skull I’d like to take back home with me to London.

Can I put it in my carry on?

Many thanks,

George

Probably UK got still legislation that is similar as in the EU. 90 day drying period but I am not hundred percent certain

I have brought home cleaned skulls to the UK before. I had no issues, as long as they arent CITIES and are completely free of any organic matter you should be fine. In fact, I hardly see a customs official to even check your bags these days.

Do you have a link to EU rules on that? Or does your 'not sure' refer to that you are unsure about the EU 90 days, or unsure about if it applies to UK.

Put it in your check in bag
Def not your carryon

I have been searching a bit more, and found this re Denmark: https://toldst.dk/en-us/individuals/special-rules-for-special-items
It says "
  • Buy souvenirs with care: Souvenirs made from endangered animals and plants may be illegal to bring into Denmark. This applies to, for example, skins, furs, boxes, bags and shoes.
As skins are allowed, I personnally would not hesitate to bring in cleaned skulls, no matter their age; and who can anyhow tell if it was cleaned last week or a year ago.

No idea if it applies to UK, but I could imagine that not all EU regulations have been weeded out yet, so it might still stand.

I think the answer is to put it in your luggage and plead ignorance of any pettifogging regulations in the unlikely event that it is discovered. You can say that you bought it at the airport.

I suspect that you are supposed to have a veterinary certificate declaring your souvenir free from anthrax, TB, rinderpest, socialism, and all the rest of it before importing it.

My luggage has never been checked coming back through Heathrow.

I searched a bit further but found nothing that could collaborate what I said earlier. Did not know why I seemed so certain about it. But what I found was this on one of the largest trophy importers from Denmark;

Hunting trophies must comply with the conditions specified in the certificate, health certificates station, including:

  • hunting trophies consisting solely of hides and skins have been
  • dried, or salted for at least 14 days prior to departure or by sending the ship to transport has been lasting as they have been salted for at least 14 days before they reach the EU border inspection.

Hunting trophies consisting solely of bones, horns, hooves, claws, antlers or teeth:

  • have been immersed in boiling water for so long that hunting trophy is freed from any spoiled leftovers,
  • or is disinfected with a product approved by the authorities, including hydrogen peroxide in the case of parts consisting of bone. The game trophies must immediately following treatment packed individually in transparent sealed package so avoid any subsequent contamination, is allowed to import treated trophies from all third countries. The importer must also ensure that the country of origin is not subject to restrictions because of the animal health situation of origin / dispatch. It should be noted that the import requirements can continuously be changed and it is the importer’s responsibility to ensure that the product always meets the on importation applicable requirements. The above relates solely to the veterinary import regulations.

Keep in mind that this is the EU and not the UK

I typically bring my Plains Game in the checked baggage from Zimbabwe to the USA. Never had a problem. Shipping is only for CITES trophies in my case

Perhaps mixing it up with the old requirements for weighing trophies for CIC medals (was 90 days, now 30):)
Yeah that could be it. Sorry for the confusion.

Hi Jon,
I saw your post for the .500 NE cases. Are these all brass or are they nickel plated? Hard for me to tell... sorry.
Thanks,
