Supressors good and bad?

What is wrong with storing them attached?
Hey sorry was away hunting.
In answer to your above question @WAB the corrosive gases etc will pit your crown, muzzle and ruin the rifles accuracy. There is a lot on the internet about. Probably not so much in your neck of the woods due to you guys having some umm interesting laws and hoops that you need to jump through to acquire one.
But yeah take it off at the end of each days hunt, even on those over night jobs.
There are a lot of sealed units out there, which are good but I’d much prefer a modular job which I can clean. The carbon build up can be qui shocking even after a short string of shots.
Obviously do what the manufacturer says in regards to cleaning.

Especially when you think about it as a lifetime investment.
A moderator isn’t a lifetime investment, it is a perishable commodity, which will be good for how every many rounds the manufacturer says. Obviously if you’re reloading and running some hot loads then you can burn them out faster. Just as some calibers will run through barrels faster, same goes for your moderator.

As @Sideshow says, remove your moderator after shooting otherwise it runs a risk of being a permanent fixture to your barrel.
Nor would I advise the use of copper grease on the barrel threads. The burnt gases and grease combine to ruin the threads. Don’t ask how I know !

So I remove the moderator, clean the gun, lube the threads and remount the moderator after every range session. I assume that this negates the potential problem?

I don't yet have a supressor but after using one in SA I'm going to order one probably next month but which? It'll be a 30 cal first and used in my 300wm and 308win with subs for pigs. I hear a lot about the Banish line but also hear their not as good as they claim they just have great marketing. Nothing but good talk about Thunderbeast but they are HIGH. So what do you guys use and recommend? The subs in 308 probably won't no used past 150 yards but the 300WM obviously will be much further so accuracy is top of the list then decibel suppression then size and weight. The 300 has a 24" barrel already so I'd rather not have a 14" can on top of that. Thanks for the help guys
AXLE 2010 - I have nothing of value to add to this post - just an opinion that is based entirely on “emotion” (like a Woman) — I don’t like (borderline Hate) Suppressors, hate the look, hate the newly perceived “need”, and hate the success that sports writers and advertisers (one in the Same) have had convincing Hunters that this is the New Fashion statement for Hunting. Now, I. Am a crusty old fashioned, resistant to new ideas, hypocrite because I love “rangefinders” and illuminated reticle scopes, nightlights for predator hunting etc.. But suppressors hit me the wrong way — and maybe that’s just me - too old to learn, too grumpy to “accept” change etc..

Hey @WAB
No I'd change that habit and store it off the rifle.
The gas etc is still in the mod, gravity and physic is still in play.
Mine I put in a its cardboard box at the base of the safe, even though I clean the mod. For the sake of the 10min to clean it or 20sec to take it off of the rifle.

Sure I hear guys all the time saying "Mines not a safe queen" And "My rifle is a tool"
But would you let a tradesman into your home, who rocks up and his van is a mess and his tools are in a poor sate of repair....what's is work going to be like. Maybe a little off subject.
But I have seen what happens when a mod is left on and its not pretty. You do hear the flip side of "I never take it off and it hits golf balls out to 200"......OK sure but maybe if you did you would be hitting those balls at 400.:notworthy:

TBAC offer a lifetime warranty....so it is a lifetime investment in my eyes.

You are correct at some point you will need a recore. I'm not sure how suppressor are built oversea. In the US due to the bs we have to go through, they are usually built to take more abuse. It is another reason I run brakes that cans attach to, it is like an additional blast baffle.

I'm not trying to change the way you think. How is what you are saying possible? If everything is cleaned, how can "gas" get back into your barrel to cause this corrosion? There most certainly is risk of corrosion, suppressor or not. Anytime carbon is remaining in the barrel, moisture can soak into that and cause issues.

Again not trying to talk anyone into or out of anything. My rifles stay fouled. After I clean them I'll go to the backyard and run a mag through them, sometimes two depending upon the barrel. I want my barrel settled in and ready to what I ask it to do.

Suppressors should have never been a NFA item period. They have been around since 1902. We have just now 2022ish had the opportunity to get them in our hands in 90ish days. They started gaining popularity because of this fact. I fought using them for a long time, once I actually spent some quality time with one. Like 40 rounds with a 308, I knew I was not going back. The whole experience is just more pleasant. I wish from the start I had been using them, if for nothing else my hearing today would be better.

Sounds like you and I have some similar thoughts and experiences with cans, my first was in 2002 I think. I could give a hang about what people think, I want what works best for me, and at my age, my 300wby doesn't even make my ears ring anymore (unsuppressed). I'm glad to see my boys using suppressors.

Interesting thought...... if hunting were a job, OSHA would REQUIRE them.

I fully understand where you're coming from MrHank, I feel the same way about these new age tactical and "precision" hunting rifles. I want a wood or at least a decent looking classic lined glass stock, I hate the vertical grips and folding stocks in these chassis guns. I didn't care for suppressors until I hunted with one a few months ago but mine will be a big help to my daughter shooting my 308 instead of my AR (she's 5) and eliminating some of these his around here. Otherwise I still probably wouldn't get one but if I'm going to get it I want to get the best I can manage. I do much prefer the over barrel models so they don't make the rifle look like a howitzer
