Stuck in Johannesburg

I got 2 of the last four tickets for May 6th. I tried Europe flights. They were booked out even further. I wasn't flying Delta it was United. I don't think United was at fault. I'm trying to make the best out of this. I've just had one of the best experiences ever with my Dad. I'm not going to dwell on this stuff that is out of my control.
So my agent, Patrick at TWG, says it is only United having trouble because they are new to the market. Other airlines have relationships where they can get fuel although it may mean a stop on the way back.
If this was me Patrick would have me out of there in a day.
I am glad you and your dad had a good trip and just make the best of the rest of it.
Philip

Wow, you have some amazing offers!!! Turn this sows ear into a silk purse and let us know how it goes. Bottom line, stop paying high rent in Jo’Burg and jump on one of these offers!

TIA! Some great suggestions have been made-very very cool of Tsala and several others helping salvage the lost time. Best wishes to all involved during a stressful experience

We are definitely making the best of it. We've been down by the pool drinking beer and booking a Giraffe and Zebra hunt in Limpopo. RIP bank account! Tomorrow we are doing a day tour to the cradle of humankind and a boat ride through some caves then on the 29th Henry Griffiths Safaris can pick us up for the hunt that Jimbo12 linked to earlier in this thread. I told my dad we are turning lemons into gold nuggets!

Have fun, rolling with the punches and making the most out of it!

Hopefully they’ll take you bird hunting too. Some really great bird hunting in South Africa I haven’t seen mentioned yet.

I've had worse problems.

Thankfully, you are not quarantined and locked in a room!

Enjoy the lemonade you are making. Good for you.

Everyone says, you will be booking a second safari on the way home. I think you have just set an all time record.

Now that's the attitude. That's what hunters do, when presented this opportunity why would you run? Good on the outfitter for reading this and assisting.

A very good decision on the zebra, you can shoot one, get tanned and ship home for same price or cheaper if you get cull TF. Last summer I rented a car, drove 6000KM all over SA, from Cape Town to Kruger. Go in the park, rent a hut, camp and see the big 5, its very cheap compared to Canadian Parks and another lifelong memory.

I do hope after this experience you post a report so more members can really see what's possible when Sh"t happens.

Depending upon several factors, this additional report could end up closer to a novel in length. Good luck. The longer this thread goes on, the more I become jealous of @45bthompson situation he is in.

Hey guys, I just finished my first South African hunt and it was amazing. My father and I were supposed to fly out today but due to a fuel shortage we are going to hang out in joburg till the 6th of May. We have 10 extra days. What should we do? We booked a trip to the cradle of life and the caves for Thursday but I'm looking for suggestions
I know a guy you can go culling Zebras with. Great price

If this ever happened to me I would need notarized affidavits from the airlines, travel agent and everyone else involved. It would serve as proof that I wasn’t lying when I told my wife!!!!!!. She would insist that I planned it all along

By the way love the fact you are just going with it!!!! Hope for life and humanity! You will appreciate the extra 10 days someday I am sure of it!

They are having issues per some mart people because they have nowhere else in Africa to grab fuel like everyone else.

We do the exact same! Drive all over! Love this and wish there was a lot more of it vs all the people stressing about every detail. The great hunters of Africa dealt with all sorts of crap. Love this!!!

Henry Griffiths post said that the hunt includes a limit of birds and a night jackal hunt. I'm excited about that as I imagine it will be similar to coyote hunting in the midwest. I'll have to borrow a gun as I don't think 30.06 will be good for birds or Jackals!

WOW!!!

Amazing help, support and recommendations from everyone. I've been reading this since it started, and it's Absolutely Amazing. I have to commend 45bthompson on for maintaining his composure in this event, and truly turning an unforeseen event into what will be an amazing trip.

But the best part of this has been everyone's suggestions, reaching out to friends and PH's they know to try and assist. This is way better than "paying it forward", it's truly helping out a fellow hunter who is stuck.

I have a quote that I've used for a couple of decades, " It's never an adventure while it's happening". While that usually fit's most of my work/excursions, I think it fit's here with a minor tweak, "It is an adventure while it is happening".

Fantastic outpouring of support!!

I can't agree more! I am so impressed with the community here. I have received a bunch of PMS with suggestions and advice also. Thank you to everyone!

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS FOR MY RIFLE, ALWAYS APPROACH A NEW LOAD CAUTIOUSLY!!*
Rifle is a Pierce long action, 32" 1:8.5 twist Swan{Au} barrel
{You will want a 1:8.5 to run the heavies but can get away with a 1:9}
Peterson .280AI brass, CCI 200 primers, 56.5gr of 4831SC, 184gr Berger Hybrid.

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
