Stuck in Johannesburg

It's supposedly an airport wide fuel shortage. The direct flights back and fourth to the states are non existent. I've heard that European flights are still running as the planes can run without refueling. Those are all booked out for the next 3 weeks though. I've had worse problems.
I can't really think of a worse problem than that if it happened to me? I would have to burn at least another ten days of personal time from work. The Safari trip alone eats up two plus weeks of vacation time. Not a good situation!

There is nothing even available for purchase. I've spent 6 hours on the phone today dealing with this. Europe flights are still running but you cannot get tickets.
6 hours? Have your travel agent look for flights while you're lounging by the pool. LOL

I've been retired since 2016. I would definitely run out of money before days off.
Yeah, nothing like paying for two weeks in the vacation paradise of JoBerg waiting for a flight home after an expensive Safari trip?

I dont see any delta flights that got canceled. Sundays return flight to Atlanta left and is back and the next flight Wed to JNB is still showing scheduled to go. Hopefully thats a good sign for everyone.

It sounds like he did his flights himself

I leave on Delta May 18 to JNB for Cape Buffalo in Matetsi.
Hopefully sorted out soon. If not change airlines and make it happen.

I checked with a friend who flies for Delta, and it seems like it was a one day thing. Maybe check with Delta.

Book a bird hunt or deep sea fishing.

Or book a flight to Victoria Falls and go check that out.

Or book a flight to Tanzania and go do some sight seeing there.

Usually African continent flights are cheap.

Realize funds are tight but you are there with your dad. This is an amazing opportunity and something you can tell your grandkids about, stranded in Africa and start country hopping. This is why God gave us credit cards.

I agree I work there and it does not seem to be affecting our flights!

Great advice!

I have insurance. It won't get us home though. My dad is retired and I have plenty of leave built up but it's hard on my family back home. I'd love to do more hunting but I've already got taxidermy on a Gemsbok, Kudu and an Impala I need to save up for.
Euro mounts save space and money! Keep hunting haha:A Stirring:

Well, this is a concern I never thought about lol. Fly Turkish over there in 3 weeks

Kruger is absolutely amazing and is an experience that you will never forget! I rented a car and drove to Kruger, and it was easy. I also drove The Panoramic Route, went to the caves, and a few other things. But if you don't feel comfortable driving the highways, a flight to Scakuza is fairly reasonable. That's the airport that is right in Kruger national Park. Then you can rent a car from there and you're just driving within the park. Like I said, the park is awesome, and you and your Dad will cherish the memories forever!
Alternatively, do what others have suggested and do another hunt. Possibly a cull hunt, or just do euros as suggested by others. Personally, I wouldn't buy a Zebra rug because it would mean nothing to me. There are some good deals out there to hunt them, and get them tanned in Africa.
I have a friend that owns a tour company there, and I could hook you guys up for more ideas if you would like. I also have an outfitter in the Thabasimbi area in mind that I will get ahold of and see what they can do for you!
Cheers!

I will private message you some contact information for my friend with the tour company. I also have another friend who does tours. She's there right now with a group, but I think it was ladies only. I will try to get a hold of her as well.

That's our plan but now I'm going to bed. Shit happens. It's just an extension of an already awesome trip. I'll figure it out tomorrow.

@45bthompson,

Hello, I like the “!hit happens & we’ll deal w/ it mentality.” Correct Focus when Int. Travel Snafu’s arise! I know, I had an unforeseen African Travel incident in Sept 2021 that no one could avoid & 8-day delay … I was w/ a family member, we had the paid time off & ultimately a ‘Blessing in Disguise!’

** Joburg** Big City as you know, can be difficult to navigate & some areas not safe like most big cities - best move on.

1) Def. jump on TSALA PM … extra time in a Camp Setting, 2hrs from Joburg is a great thing! Even as non-Hunters, share a chalet w/ Dad, access to bush hikes, photography, camaraderie in camp/staff, etc.

2) Or, Self-drive …

a) Get rental car & head South to East London (in RSA/LOL) a coastal town, easy to navigate & plenty of affordable B&B.
b) From there follow the Coast to Port Elizabeth (PE) & into Tsitsikamma National Forest - Booking.com has plenty of stay options, fun & relaxing activities there.
c) Garden Route - within this Region you can hit portions of the Garden Route.

For me, the glass is always Half Full … I’d fill the remainder w/ quality South African red wine & feel lucky - your stay was extended!

Happy Trails

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

Rifle is a Pierce long action, 32" 1:8.5 twist Swan{Au} barrel

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
