SOUTH AFRICA: Elephant Hunt With Paw Print Safaris 2015

I should note that we were seeing game at every turn. The river had a nice pod of about 10 hippos that included a very nice bull and a couple of babies. Kudu, bushbuck, baboon, Cape buffalo, diker, Nyala, eagles, monkeys, crocks and even lion.
But back to the elephant hunt. We stalked the three bulls including the bull we wanted for me for about three hours. We really started pushing them hard and unfortunately they turned on the jets and got away. I'm telling you these guys moved off and there was no way we could keep pace with them. By now it was 30 minutes before sun down so we headed to camp.

Saturday August 29th
Today we started very early. Breakfast at 05:30 hrs and we departed for the hunting grounds at 0600 hrs.
The elephant activity during the night was considerable and we soon found that a large tree had been pushed down across the river road. Not wanting to waste time hacking that thing apart we found a way to go around. About 0645 we started up a hill and we saw a large bull off to the left. It was the one we wanted from the night before. The stalk was on! Slow and easy was the order of the day and we took our time.
Guess what???
We were In position for me to take a side brain shot at about 0720. But he was moving slightly to my right so the shot was called off. We repositioned the sticks as the bull broke limbs and pushed over a smaller tree? He stood still eating a small limb!
I'm on the sticks with my Ruger 416 Guide Gun! I've loaded Hornady DGS 400 grain solids. These rounds move at 2300 feet per second.
"Can you see the ear hole" was whispered in my ear hole. Yes I said I see it clearly. Pieter had taken time the day before to have me aim at a couple of the 34 elephants we saw so that I could see that ear hole clearly through the scope. " When you are ready take your shot" three other rifles were aimed at the bull at the same time.
The Ruger barked and the elephant threw up his trunk high and his head went back! The classic response you want to see took place. The back legs dropped the the 5 1/2 ton animal rolled onto his left side. I was told to follow up quickly with a chest shot which I did. We waited a few seconds to see what the other bulls would do as they moved off slightly. We walked up behind my bull and I put an insurance shot through the back of his head.
The bull was dead when he hit the ground! The two follow up shots were not needed. The Ruger Guide Gun and the Hornady DGS had done the job!
As we walked up to the bull Pieter exclaimed that my shot had been perfect! A fists distance In front of the ear hole spells dead elephant!

Congrats Charlie!!!!
