Some 7x64 CZ550 Pics for Sestoppleman

Follow up to this thread.

I have now received my rifle from Europe.

It is an F.N 98 action with a Delcour barrel
put together by Dumoulin Fils Milmort circa 1950's.

Overall it is in extremely good shape, considering its age,
and certainly good enough to hunt with.

The only potential drawback I can see is the limited magazine box length.

At 88mm I would like to ask Mlg and Ses,
will this short mag box limit my loading potential with Barnes 140gn T.Shoks ?

Mlg have you tried ADI 2213sc ?

Thanks in advance,

Paul.

Paul, I dont know for sure what 88mm is in inches, but it should be around 3.3 inches, or about normal for this round. I cannot imagine why it would be shorter than standard. I never used the 140 Barnes in my 3 7x64's so cannot address that, but again I cant imagine you would not be able to load them to a suitable length. Sounds like an interesting rifle.

88mm = 3.46 inches.

Thanks Eric! Your college ed is showing up! ;)

PaulT, if you have what Eric shows here, you dont have a short box at all. Max OAL is less than 3.4 inches, LEE says 3.307 is max. All of my STEYR loads are under 3.4 to fit the rotary magazine.

Thanks to both Ses and Erik.

I was begining to think that the mag box might limit the overall length of cartridges loaded with the long T.S.X's.

With a bit of searching I see that the standard mag length for the 98's is what I have here.

Now all that remains is to build up some loads as see how the .284's are going to fire in a .285 (European 7mm) groove dia barrel.

Thanks again chaps,

Paul.

Dont sweat that thousandths of an inch, even if its there, it wont matter Any barrel can vary by that much.

Hi Paul

My 140 gn TTSX load (can't get them atm!) is Sako brass and 55gns Rel 17 for an average of 2930 fps. Overall length of 3.43".

I did not bother with 2213sc as I have always had very good results with R17.

If you use this load please work up from a couple of grains below. I use Quickload for my load development and that's pretty much flat chat in my rifle on a 38 degree C day. But still safe in my rifle chamber and it shows no obvious signs of pressure.

Mike, much appreciate you sharing your knowledge.

I've ended up with about 50/50 Norma and Sellier&Bellot cases.
I don't know how these compare with the Sako cases, in terms of capacity,
so I will start well down below your load and increase from there.

R17 is not difficult to get around here, the only thing remaining is to see how the Alliant powders behave in the Tropics.

Like you I'm finding it tough to get T.Shoks.
I've had 500 T.Shoks on back order for over three months !

If they don't turn up soon I will be relying on the factory stuff I bought
which is S&B 140gn soft points.
I'm not sure how these will hold up on a 100kg+ mud-encrusted Arnhemland boar !

I guess I'll find out soon enough.

Thanks again for your advice on this cartridge, which is totally new to me.

Cheers,

Paul.

P.S if anyone on this thread wishes to see pics you can p.m me your e-mail address and I can e-mail them to you.

Paul

I do have some S&B cases and from memory they hold very slightly less than the Sako cases. I have reloaded them and they are fine though I have noticed that the primer pockets are just a tad shallow. I did not worry about recutting them though.

Regarding the 140 gn factory S&B Softs - we used them last year on some very big bodied donkeys out west and a few reasonable sized pigs with no problems - though we did not get pass throughs on the donkeys. They kill though! Grouping in my rifle was about 1-1.5" as they are a mild load - but very pleasant to shoot.

Mannlicher,
that is a very fine looking MS.

Looks like she has plenty of life left in her too !

Nice rifle.

I was recently offered one very similar as yours, only it was chambered in .243.

Sadly, I have no use for a .243

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
