Scope suggestions

From what I've seen, no one has given you any bad advice. I recently put a Leupold VX5 HD with a lighted reticle on my newly acquired 416 Remington Mag.

Another option, light weight and bulletproof:

My 416RM wears a Swaro Z8i 1-8x24 with the 4A-IF reticle.
The lit reticle with or without the bullseye is amazing.

Whichever scope you end up deciding on...
Do yourself a favor and mount it in a quality set of QD mounts.
Talley, Warne or Alaska Arms should be able to sort you out.

A surprisingly good DG scope that won't break the bank and would give you another animal or two to hunt with the money saved compared to many, much more expensive scopes is the Leupold FXII 2.5X Ultralight. Great balance among important measures including: toughness, optical resolution, FOV, visible reticle, good exit pupil all with a very generous eye relief of 4.9".

For strength, I have settled on front and rear dovetail rings for my DG rifles but sometimes have to mix and match the bases for mounting on different actions. On my two Win 70 416 Rem Mags, I've tried the following Leupold scopes: an older Leupold M8 4X, VX3 1.5-5, VX3i 1.5-5 and the FXII 2.5 Ultralight. All have worked well with no issues.

I've settled on the Leupold FXII 2.5 Ultralight for two of my DG rifles- one of the Win M 70s in 416 Rem and an MRC '99 in 450 Watts. Additionally I have a Leupold VX3i 2.5-8 on a Win 70 375 HH and a Leupold VX3i 1.5-5 on another Win 70 416 Rem.

I used the 2.5 on my 500 A2 for several years and it withstood the recoil perfectly. I changed it because I did not like the lack of higher power. I have attached a Nikon Slughunter which some say is the toughest scope made.

I like the look of that scope!

The advice to buy the best quality glass that you can afford is something I wish I had learned as a young lad.
I have been using a Riton 1-8 on my 375 for a while and the glass is VERY sharp and a step below the swaro, leica, S&B level but in the mid price point. They would be a consideration also.

That scope is parallax fixed at 100 yards. It'll be a blur at 25. YMMV but I would not want this scope on a rifle that could be possibly used at short ranges.

Is there a reason the scopes are mounted like that, 90 degrees CCW? Ejection issues with the turrets?

I've been using a Vortex PST Gen 2 1-6 with illuminated dot reticle on my Model 70 375 for 2 years now. While this rifle-scope combo has over 200 rounds through it during training without issue, it's not been to Africa yet due to Covid. I have 3 previous PG trips with Vortex Razor HD LH scopes and they've always been flawless, hence my choice here. Not a commonly encountered scope for this application, but well-tested in the tactical world where I work. It's really a great set-up with the large turrets and easy to use illumination controls. As my eyes have aged, I find the illuminated dot to be a real advantage, especially for close, fast work.
