A surprisingly good DG scope that won't break the bank and would give you another animal or two to hunt with the money saved compared to many, much more expensive scopes is the Leupold FXII 2.5X Ultralight. Great balance among important measures including: toughness, optical resolution, FOV, visible reticle, good exit pupil all with a very generous eye relief of 4.9".
For strength, I have settled on front and rear dovetail rings for my DG rifles but sometimes have to mix and match the bases for mounting on different actions. On my two Win 70 416 Rem Mags, I've tried the following Leupold scopes: an older Leupold M8 4X, VX3 1.5-5, VX3i 1.5-5 and the FXII 2.5 Ultralight. All have worked well with no issues.
I've settled on the Leupold FXII 2.5 Ultralight for two of my DG rifles- one of the Win M 70s in 416 Rem and an MRC '99 in 450 Watts. Additionally I have a Leupold VX3i 2.5-8 on a Win 70 375 HH and a Leupold VX3i 1.5-5 on another Win 70 416 Rem.
