Ruger Hawkeye African...in 9.3x62

Got more braggin' material today! Picked this up off Gunbroker recently. It wasnt any bargain like the .338RSM but these are hard to find in this caliber. The last couple I have seen sell on auction sites went for well over 1K, which is what I paid for this one. My dealer feels it is unfired. No box or rings but Oh Well! Gonna slap a Zeiss Conquest 4X on it tonight.

Thanks guys. Hell of a thing to have to spend 1K on a rifle you dont need just because you have loaded ammo and components left over and nothing to shoot them in! Had been looking at perhaps another CZ, great gun but I already had one. I like to get different stuff. Looked for one of the Zastava rifles but couldn't find one in this cal, though they are made. So in the end when this one popped up the other day I watched it for a couple of days and then someone starting bidding to try to meet the reserve price and once that is met the BUYNOW feature goes away and I have seen more than once where the buyer ended up paying more for a gun than if he had just hit the BUYNOW when he had the chance. Sooooo I just said to hell with it and hit that button! Its really nice, very decent trigger for a fact job. Also of note, this one has a mag box of over 3.40" instead of the usualy 3.35 or so. It looks to have a Euro style throat as well so its good when you have both those features, but not just one. Bullets can be loaded out to max or beyond for the throat and still fit in the box.:tongue: I have a couple of boxes of the old 250gr Ballistic Tips and some old 250 Speers as well. When those run out I will either have to sell the gun or start shooting the more expensive stuff.

I am still working with it between other guns. So far it seems to like several loads using 250 and 270gr Speer's and also Triple Shocks. Havent tried any 286's yet, no real need to anyway. Seems to like IMR4895, 4064 and Hodgdons Varget. 250 Nosler Ballistic Tips shoot pretty well too but I think this rifle may like flat base bullets better than boat tails, it happens, I dont care. If I ever take it hunting I would try to find the best load for either the Nosler Accubond or the Triple Shock. I have used both in this cal in Africa and both do the job. Its a pretty slick rifle all in all.

Ses, that's an awesome rifle in a grand caliber.

I remember handling one in my local gunshop several months ago.
It had been returned by it's previous owner, who only had it but a few months, because "it kicked too much" !

That particular model Ruger fits me like a custom cut stock and handles and points very, very well.
I was very tempted in buying it and if I didn't have a 9.3x64 on the way from the States at the time it would have been going home with me.

In my modest opinion this is one of, if not , THE best handling bolt-gun manufactured under the Ruger label.
And in 9.3x62 very versatile and practical for large plains game etc.

I bought a big bunch of 250gners to load in my x64mm when-ever it gets here and am interested in any results you may have loading them.

I shot the hell out of them in my first x62, a CZ 550. I ended up with a load of 61grs of IMR 4064 for just over 2500fps. This load worked well in the CZ and this Ruger. I tried with varying degrees of success a number of powders but the 4064 was most consistent. In the Ruger the other day I shot some IMR4895 and Speer 250's and the first group was great but they got worse and worse as I went along, not sure why. With another bullets a rare RWS steel jacketed bullet I had some of, they shot great with 57grs of the stuff. Of course none of these loads will do much for the 64 you have coming. In that bigger case I would look towards slower powders. I have been having very good results lately with Win760 ball powder in several rifles. Just a bit faster than IMR4350, but being ball powder you can get good velocity without having to compress so much as it settles nicely. Look forward to hearing about the new rifle coming.

i'm really praying that the 250gn T.Shoks shoot well enough in my 9.3 rifle.
I went and bought 500 in one lot, and am stuck with them now.

My rifle is a 1:12 twist barrel of good quality, i'm hoping thats not too slow for that projectile weight/style.

My problem is that my magazine length will limit me to crimping those T.Shoks over the final band meaning they protrude quite a bit into the case and reducing capacity a bit.
Hence me buying the 250gn's over the 270gn's.

I have used the T.Shoks extensively in .375 and am hoping they work as well in 9.3mm.

I'm not an accuracy freak, these will be hunting loads and if I can get 1.5 - 2" groups reliably at 100yds that is all well enough for my purposes.

Are you getting at least 2" groups with the T.Shoks in your x62mm ?
Do you crimp the T.Shoks ?
Do you know what your barrel twist is ?

Paul, I expect an inch with those bullets or I keep looking for the load. The 4064 load I mentioned does an inch and under. I do crimp them at OAL of 3.32" in the CZ, but have shot them in the Ruger too at same. I believe the twist is 9 or 10 but not sure. I wouldnt worry about a 1-12 twist in this caliber, should be fine.
