Ruger 270 hard to chamber ammo

Asking for help please. I have a Ruger in 270 that cycles fine without ammo but with ammo it is a fight to close the bolt. If it was a DR I would send it to JJ. He no longer does bolt action work. I am asking for a gunsmith someone may know who can smooth this out please. As always your help is so greatly appreciated!!!!

The chamber is dirty or rusted even if it looks fine. Have the barrel scoped. I have seen this before.

Might be a bit too far south for you but John Whidden and his guys do great work. They are located just outside of Nashville, GA. You won’t find a nicer group of guys either. John and his guys really knows their stuff.

He is a multiple time, long range national champion shooter. He has done quite a bit of work for me and I’ve been pleased with all of it. I’m sure you could ship the rifle to him if you didn’t want to take it all the way down there.

Head space may also be a little tight. You could also try a different brand of ammo. Shoulder may be a little forward on the ammo you have.

Same as others, factory or reloads? Does a different type, brand of round fit? Dirt, rust or crap in chamber, shoulder not correct or headspace. All could be reason. Any reasonable smith will be able to solve this easily. Fix may not be as easy. Be sure to post when you have it solved.

Make sure the bolt face is clean. The tang safety Rugers are push feed, but have a claw extractor. It’s possible that’s not jumping the rim very well.

I'd check the chamber really good. If this was a used rifle, there may be a piece of brass stuck in the chamber that is not allowing the bolt to close with a round. If it's a new rifle, the chamber is too short.

You can get a teslong bore scope off of Amazon that connects to your phone. It is very economical, for the money they are hard to beat. Use them all the time to confirm the carbon ring has been removed while cleaning.

If you have one check the chamber out. If you don't have one, you will find many uses for it. This would be the first, you will atleast be better informed on all your rifles.

What does the brass look like after you chamber a fresh round, then eject it? Compare that ejected round to another fresh & unchambered round closely: look to see if the shoulder has been set back on the chambered round. If you have a 20ga bore brush soak it in Hoppe’s and scrub that chamber, then clean patch it. Repeat the fresh round chambering test. Brass look any different than the first round? Is the shoulder still set back?

Consider taking a live factory round and painting the whole thing black with a magic marker/sharpie; let it dry and then chamber the round, any points of excessive contact will disturb the black ink.

The .416 Taylor round on the right has a set back shoulder from forcing the bolt closed on a rifle that had a barrel installed without finish reaming to SAAMI spec.

I had this issue with a Ruger American. It was tight headspace and they replaced the entire rifle

My money is on a headspace issue if this is a new production rifle. Rugers QC is not too great these days

This is the one I use. Check the condition of the bore, line up the gas block on a gas port, lots of uses.

You could also blacken the bullet with dry erase marker, then try gently chamber. Remove round and look. Mark will appear on round where stoppage is. Just did this with some not chambering reloads on a new 260, seams like this rifles rounds must be seated at exact or just under OAL. Maybe yours is same? My first time this has ever been seen by me. Weird DM will not be length limiting factor on reloads.

I tell you what I found. It had a three movement flag safety apparently put on it. when in the middle position the safety is engaged as if in the full back position. In this middle position gun does not fire until in full forward fire position. in the fire and safe middle position I found gun does just fine with ammo. no problem. As always so grateful for everyone’s thoughts and help!!!!
