Fire is one of the main components to possess to help you to survive in Africa , especially at night [eg. some protection from dangerous animals] as opposed to the northern hemisphere where it is again a must have, but for a totally different reason--COLD!
There are some that will go as far as to swear that fire is even more important to possess than a cutting tool !
Fire can be made by various means, one of which is the age old method of hand friction. It's a wonderful skill to master and to have.
I personally have tried this method a couple of times ,but all I got were blisters and a short temper ! [wrong wood I think]
Using the more 'advanced' bow-drill method as shown below is maybe a better option in a pinch for us not so skilled guys.
Nah, for me personally, as a non smoker, a small BIG lighter is worth the 'weight' to carry e.d.c. in a pocket, thanks !

FIRE !
Interesting Making an upside down fire. It’s a cleaner burn with far less smoke and better combustion, gives off more heat, needs less tending and uses the embodied energy in wood more efficiently than the tipi-esque fire method.

Great advice on what to carry when "out bush" in Africa. Most of us will not be alone, we'll have "Professionals" with us to help and guide. The technology issue is an important one, after water and food, fire and a blade, they would be net on the list for the bush pack, or whatever you call it. Advice I was given long agocomes into play too: if you find water, don't leave it, and if you're on the move, always check your backtrail, to know your way back if you have to to around.

Using 'modern' items in a survival situation...

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?

Do you have any cull hunts available? 7 days, daily rate plus per animal price?
