This morning I saw a packet of stinking Sardines in the local shop, and on the spur of the moment I bought them.

I then quickly on the spot picked up a plastic bottle and cut a 8m long plastic string with my pocket knife. I then set a 'primitive' Coke bottle static 'survival' line in the river near my house for Barbel/Catfish with an emergency fish hook I carry edc.
Just like in a possible survival bug-out situation...

Allways practice as far as possible in real life scenarios your edc, tools, skills, knowledge etc,etc to be sure you are prepared!

We will see how this experiment pans out in a possible real life emergency scenario, as I know these fish must be there.....

UPDATE [for interesting sake..]
My smelly saltwater Maasbankers on Baber in the winter experiment...
[I wrongly initially thought it was Sardines!]
After this bait was in the Besbokspruit water for about 50 hours, I today [8 July] removed it.

213321276_1027755858031923_5043901545716250815_n.jpg

As can be seen on the top photo, both the baits are still intact.
The second photo with 2 x chicken hearts dosed in red Baber-calling spray-on 'blood' were in the same water and about 10 m away for about 16 hours and it was only later, after I got no action on the 2 x Maarsbanker salt fish bait Baber lines, added for a control.

210131427_527473405141209_7843023776753717530_n.jpg

As can also be observed, a 2l bottle was added here to help 'fight' the Baber on this static line fastened on an about finger thick movable branch on the river bank to prevent the line from snapping should a big one take the bait.....

[Remember, this whole exercise was just a research catch-and release experiment for a type of realistic 'survival' scene in a story that I am writing, and not a 'how-to' fishing post. ]

Everything has been removed afterwards as this fishing method might be frowned upon by some as maybe 'poaching' ... so, no fish were 'hurt' in this process!

Possible Conclusions??
1] There are no Babers in the river at that spot?
2] The Blesbokspruit's water near Heidelberg in June are far to cold [day temp here +_ 16 C] for Baber/Catfish to be active during this time of winter...?
3] Rather try catching Baber in a dam with some shallower warmer water during a winter-day?
4] Mine illegally dumping their rubbish in the river upstream?

[I have caught Baber in various other dams in Limpopo and Mpumalanga during this summer with the same 2 x 'survival' 'rigs' as on these photos, [but not a river yet] so I don't think that these rigs could be a reason?]
Regards

In the US, catfish usually head for deep water in the winter, so they may not be there (that spot in the river) this time of year.
Another factor, is if there is hot water dumping into the river (from a power plant or mining operation) the fish tend to congregate there. Yum, three eyed fish o_O:sick:
Another useful passive fishing tool is to tie another 2 liter in the middle of your line to act as a float or “bobber”. This seems to get more interest from the fish, and can help indicate fish on the line.
As for the Maasbanker, you may try cutting them in half in a survival situation (or future experiments) as the catfish tend to have an easier time smelling/locating them. Also, bigger baits tend to only attract big fish.
Thanks for the experiment @observe !

Just a conversation opinion.....ALONE
I observe a very interesting cutting/sharp tool selection choice compared to the first seasons...
And I can not agree more with this trend!
[Also observe that about 45% of S1-8 contestants and even 3 previous winners [ALONE S 3,4,6] carry a multi-tool !]
Currently 4 out of the last 5 contestants of S8 [And 8/10] opted for a smaller multi-tool [pocket/folder?] knife [+_ 18 tools in one] instead of a bigger 'Hunting/ Survival/Field/Bushcraft' - type knife for this Alone scenario...
After the initial shelter building tasks, it's merely [very] rough camping knife wise.
How much blade do you really need in these static situations?
[Carving/Skinning/Rope cutting/Fish preparing/ Camp crafting tasks etc]
Self defence [some will argue] ,with a belt knife against a Bear/Wolf? Better make a longer spear with a fire hardened sharp point, maybe it will help ....?
A full tang is stronger than a folder? Absolutely, but is still a valuable KNIFE and not a prying tool....
With an ax and saw at your disposal, a smaller rather than a bigger all-around camp use blade is the way to go in my humble opinion...
I really can not wait for the time when a future skilled contestant choose another appropriate smaller pocket knife as his choice cutting tool!
He/She will NOT be at a disadvantage blade wise...
For sure,in this situation any cutting tool is better than no cutting tool! [go Biko!] and more than one knife is best!
I really respect each contestant's knife selection, and it is what they are comfortable with--good for you!

All the best to the last 5, you all have my respect!

And some people got upset over me that i did not followed the News or papers or Cnn and Trevor Noah " news". Well sellouts and haters of their own aint worth follow. That learn one to see election fraud as a trattorous act against charity and kindness ,and a good survival tool it is.

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS FOR MY RIFLE, ALWAYS APPROACH A NEW LOAD CAUTIOUSLY!!*
Rifle is a Pierce long action, 32" 1:8.5 twist Swan{Au} barrel
{You will want a 1:8.5 to run the heavies but can get away with a 1:9}
Peterson .280AI brass, CCI 200 primers, 56.5gr of 4831SC, 184gr Berger Hybrid.

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
