UPDATE [for interesting sake..]
My smelly saltwater Maasbankers on Baber in the winter experiment...
[I wrongly initially thought it was Sardines!]
After this bait was in the Besbokspruit water for about 50 hours, I today [8 July] removed it.

As can be seen on the top photo, both the baits are still intact.
The second photo with 2 x chicken hearts dosed in red Baber-calling spray-on 'blood' were in the same water and about 10 m away for about 16 hours and it was only later, after I got no action on the 2 x Maarsbanker salt fish bait Baber lines, added for a control.

As can also be observed, a 2l bottle was added here to help 'fight' the Baber on this static line fastened on an about finger thick movable branch on the river bank to prevent the line from snapping should a big one take the bait.....

[Remember, this whole exercise was just a research catch-and release experiment for a type of realistic 'survival' scene in a story that I am writing, and not a 'how-to' fishing post. ]
Everything has been removed afterwards as this fishing method might be frowned upon by some as maybe 'poaching' ... so, no fish were 'hurt' in this process!
Possible Conclusions??
1] There are no Babers in the river at that spot?
2] The Blesbokspruit's water near Heidelberg in June are far to cold [day temp here +_ 16 C] for Baber/Catfish to be active during this time of winter...?
3] Rather try catching Baber in a dam with some shallower warmer water during a winter-day?
4] Mine illegally dumping their rubbish in the river upstream?
[I have caught Baber in various other dams in Limpopo and Mpumalanga during this summer with the same 2 x 'survival' 'rigs' as on these photos, [but not a river yet] so I don't think that these rigs could be a reason?]
