Rewilding elephants from Kent to Kenya

An interesting question would be how many elephants are currently in the UK parks managed by the charities. Do the 13 ele involved in the proposal represent a small subset or the total amount? Have the park operators discovered that increasing herd numbers quickly deplete the available resources? Is this really about having too many ele and being politically unable to thin the herd therefore attempt to ship the problem elsewhere?

As to the scheme itself, in general I'm very opposed to rewilding dangerous animals. From what I've read, an increasing number of fatal animal attacks are now being found to involve rewilded populations which have both lost their fear of humans, and associated humans with food provision.

I guess my question is.. why Kenya?

If the intent is truly to let the animals flourish in their natural habitat and to remove them from a captive environment.. why would you send them somewhere that elephant populations havent been properly managed or cared for and have been in decline and/or stagnant for better than 40 years?

The elephant population in Kenya has decreased by 7.5% since 2007...

So send more elephants to a place where elephants arent doing great?

To the greenie idiots it makes perfect sense because they, by their nature and record, ignore facts. All “feel good” ignorance by choice. They think Kenya is the perfect place because no sport hunting since ‘77. Maybe they’ll stomp on a few wide eyed, granola bar, peanut toting eco safari touri after “re wilding”. Seriously, hope it works, at least for some of the elephant’s sake- beats the heck out of a zoo park. Also assume Kenya is the correct geographic race?…. but who knows with some of the idiots in charge.

Mrs " ara" Johnson ,wife of PM Boris Johnson is behind this rewilding of elephants from a zoo or park in Kent to Kenya, how long will they survive before poachers get them, or the chinese ?
This whole thing’s a farce . They just want to reinforce the lie that conservation can be done without hunting . Good luck to them . Last time Kenya tried that in 1977 , they destroyed most of their game . This time , those British elephants will damage whatever’s left of the biodiversity which poachers couldn’t reach yet .

I’ve personally seen how disastrous this folly can be . Back when I used to be the DFO of Bangladesh’s side of the Sundarban mangrove forests , it was suggested that a few Indian Royal Bengal Tigers be released into the forest to boost up the numbers of the local species . The end result was very destructive . They ended up competing for food with the local species . They also had a very difficult time in the saltwater of the mangrove swamps .

There are specific ways to protect a damaged ecosystem and get it to bounce back from biodiversity loss . Introducing a foreign species isn’t one of them . And no matter how many elephants you reintroduce , the problem of poaching will exist extensively in countries where hunting is banned .

I believe Botswana offered the UK as many elephants as they wanted and told them at the same time not to try and tell Botswana how to manage the over poulation.

You can also have as many elephant as you want from Kruger just pay the capture and relocation costs.....nobody wants them....

They should fly some poachers in to give the ele some practical experience......

A true re-wilding should include the everyday UK citizen developing some empathy for what Elephants do to the poor African villager. A little local training in Kent would be an excellent idea. Let the Ele's loose and see who's gardens and houses get stomped.
Maybe that will rework some thinking on saving Elephants over Africans.
I won't hold my breath.

Maybe one of the lunatic animal rights groups should "rescue" the poor oppressed "captive" elephants by ripping down the park fences and letting them roam free, preferably heading in the direction of London.:P Devil:

If they let the eles loose in Kent and they did any damage that would increase the folly of getting them out of the country. Let someone else have the problem.

I have a feeling my phone might right if they did that. But I agree there is always this romantic idea of Africa when the reality is very different

Update

KWS was not informed about plan,Kenyan Gov havent given permission to it, and saying it is very difficult ,expensive and can be quite stressfull on top of it.

Not been any more money donations since early Monday .

Same time, a suggestion came to ban elephants in UK in Zoos ,50ish animals it is ca.

Interesting , these animals have been almost lifestock for lost or whole life, and now they think it will be so simple as ferals ? Very doubtful it would go good there, most likely a tragedy in waiting ,best not to begin with at all .

So if they ban elephants in uk zoos I guess they will have to dispatch the remaining stock. I dont think the british public will be too happy about that

Or just set them loose. What could possibly go wrong?

I would like to go on record and say I would love to see free roaming ele in the UK. Then the people that think we are horrible people will get a taste of what life is like in Africa to have your hard work ruined

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
