Red Dot & RMR Sights For Dangerous Game Rifles

The problem of parallax in some reflex sights has been brought up a couple of times in this thread. It seems to be one of those issues best avoided, like “whistling through the graveyard”. I first noticed it on a PH’s DG rifle years ago and it cured me of ever using one or putting one on any of my rifles. I know the principle of consistent cheek weld for some mitigation of the parallax issue but in the real world of shooting under stress, not something I want to have to think about.

Having shot and hunted extensively with Aimpoint Micos I honestly cannot say that I ever had an issue. The bullet falls where I aim if I do my bit.

@BeeMaa do you maybe know: if I mount my Aimpoint Micro on an EAW 19mm dovetail mount for the front dovetail of my CZ550 Magnum, will that mount be compatible with a standard Weaver dovetail on other rifles?

No.

The CZ rail is not the same dimension as a Picatinny or Weaver. The only solution would be to put a Picatinny rail (or piece of a rail) on top of your CZ550, then get the correct mount to go from your AimPoint to the Pic rail.

Doing this would essentially defeat the entire purpose of having a double square bridge for which to mount optics directly on. My advice would be to keep it as simple as possible and the optic as low as possible. Put the optic on the mount, the mount on the action and go hunting.

Having mounts on mounts only introduces possible failure points. Not good on a rifle that will be used in the pursuit of DG where not only your life, but the lives of the entire hunting party could be at stake.

Thanks very much, I appreciate the info

A member asked me for advice on selecting a double rifle and chambering, and of mounting a reflex sight. My answer turned into a summation of information that I and many AH members previously provided. Below is a de-personalized version on the information.

This is the correct Hennenberger mount for a standard Trijicon RMR pattern including the RMR Type 2 and SRO.

I ordered mine from the above linked vendor and received the mount in about three weeks.

This is an article I wrote concerning reflex (RMR style) sights for dangerous game rifles. Please read the entire thread twice. It received 7-pages with a total of 124 posts. Many others contributed their excellent mounting solutions!

This is a photo from my article of a Hennenberger mount on @Kevin Peacocke 's Heym 89,

Notice this mount keeps the RMR low and naturally aligned to the shooter’s eye when using a rifle stocked for iron sights!

This is a thread from 2019 that someone awoke with comments,

Here is my post in it from the above thread,

My previously mounted RM57 mount on same rifle. Notice the difference in height.

This is the Hennenberger mount with the slot milled wider for my rifle. My gunsmith also opened up the holes for the wider and stronger 6-40 size screws. I posted this in, https://www.africahunting.com/threads/red-dot-on-a-merkal-double.95003/post-1474530

In the above post I showed an Aimpoint H1 on a Hennenberger mount for the Aimpoints on my Heym 88B.

The Aimpoints are larger than Trijicons but…
  • Aimpoint “dots” do not flare as much with my astigmatism as the dot of Trijicon sights.
  • Aimpoint sights “track” when moving to change point of impact (POI). If Aimpoint states one-click is one-MOA, it is. Trijicon, not so much… I shoot with Aimpoints in NRA precision (bullseye) pistol. I would NEVER consider using a Trijicon for Precision Pistol competition!
Everyone wants a double rifle but beware, don’t buy a entry-level double of questionable quality. It may function as design or it may not. For less than $10,000 retail cost, the thread below is my "Been there, done that" advice concerning Dreaming of a Double Rifle,

I have a Chapuis 450-400 double that looks brand new and shoots well, never been hunted from what I can tell. I am willing to part with it as I have a 375 H&H Sodia on it's way from Dorleac & Dorleac. I am looking for $9,250 for it and if you are interested, I am happy to send you some pictures. Regards,
Steve
