Just got an air freight quote for my trophies in South Africa to ship to Chicago.
Size 143x103x135cm or 56"x40"x53"
I assume this is length width and height in that order? It matters since I will pick I up in Chicago with my pickup truck.
331kg was calculated volume/size weight
Air freight $2283.90
Permits and docs. $235.00
CITES (?) $55.00
I don't have a CITES animal ?
Crate and packaging. $281.35
Carriage and transport$264.80
Facility and handling. $325.00
Carrier screening. $66.20
Liability protection. $131.18
This is US funds. Total $3,642.43
Unfortunately this of course is a lot more than expected or estimated back when I hunted in May of 2024.
Questions?
1. Should I look at other logistic companies just to compare?
2. Does this total seem accurate for a 331kg shipment?
3. I don think no would consider the ocean transport but it is $1400 cheaper. But I am in Indiana and air is to Chicago where I would pick it up and Ocean is to Houston of course. It also would not ship until Oct or November by ocean.
4. I know it's only $55 but is there a CITES fee if I don't have a CITES animal. No pigs or primates or big five.
Just got some sticker shock today considering that my hunt was around $7500 and all in my taxidermy and transport will be over $10,000.
Kudu pedestal mount without pedestal
Gemsbuck pedestal mount without pedestal
Impala shoulder mount
Zebra mount on Africa map board
Blue Wildebeest hide and skull
Impala skull
Blesbuck skull
The taxidermy looks good in the photos so happy there so far. I think it s mainly the air freight that is what is driving the prices but all the ancillary costs certainly add up.
I'm scheduled to return in 10 months but reconsidering what I would do with the trophies at these prices.
All thoughts welcome......
I want to be clear that I wasn't quoted an amount previously just what I should expect as a total cost. It was $1200 to $1400 more than expected. Just thought it would be worth exploring others as it reportedly does help in some cases. Overall they know they have you so just saying OK is not what I choose to do. If it turns out to be minimal difference then OK but I want to know.

What was your crate weight and dimensions. Who are you using for shipping?
Finally got the bill minus the US side for shipping by air from South Africa to Atlanta. I was expecting 5k all in so will be close when all the crying is done. At the end of the day it’s worth it to me, your mileage may vary. Only trophies I will bring back on my next trip will be an Eland shoulder mount, Cape Buffalo shoulder mount and a zebra rug. I will get the weight and measurements. Rex on the South African side and Coopersmith on the USA side@jimbo1972

I will get the weight and measurements. Picking up at Atlanta. That’s not too bad but the volumetric weight and dimensions would help.
Are you picking the crate up at coppersmiths or having it trucked to your house?
147 x 124 x 111cms actual weight 157kgs.@jimbo1972

What did you pay for that? Thatll be similar to what I will beh aving shipped back once my trophies are readyI would like to know who you guys used on the Africa side to ship stuff? I had 6 shoulder mounts, 4-euro mounts, and 3 flat skins. Crate 228x125x104cm. Weight 207kg. It was packed extremely well and they utilized every portion of that crate they could, I was very impressed! I used express trophy services. I will probably not have a shipment this large ever again. For what I paid for shipping, I could have gone on another safari for plains game! But it also had a trophy for each kid and my wife in it, so it was a must. I know the living room looks amazing now and I am glad we did it. I can think of a few more mounts I would like to get someday, but it’ll probably be 1/2 at a time, maybe even just euro mounts. I’d just rather go back more often and have the experience and photos!
