Products that just won't DIE

I bought some Duluth Ballroom jeans for $5 at Goodwill. The fit was awesome but they wore through quicker than any Wrangler, Levi or $10 jean I've ever worn. Shocking for $60 jeans.

Ok, I'm just going to keep thinking ballroom dancing and say that's why they wore out. They really were''t meant to work in.

Shaka Wear men's t-shirts. I bought 2 packs of 2, plain brown. I WFH, and that's my "uniform." I wear them literally every single day. The neck is still as snug as it was when I bought them 18 months ago, to say nothing of the rest of them.

They've probably all been washed 80 or 90 times since I bought them. They've faded a little bit, but fit is still perfect. Looks like I paid about $17 each for them.

My Victorinox Swiss Army pocket knife. I’ve had this one…30+ years? I use the tweezers and toothpick on a daily basis. The blades can be made shaving sharp in just a few strokes of a stone.

I remember when the insignia came off the scales… in Buffalo camp in Coutada 10, Mozambique. I had a small vial of 100% DEET insect repellent for the tsetse flies…well, that shit will melt some plastics… like the scales of my knife. It even left my fingerprint impression, but that wore smooth over the years.

I am still wearing my grandfathers Woolrich hunting coat and pants set. Pushing 90 years hard use in the woods. Not hunting related but my son and I both still using our Chota wading shoes for 25 years.

  • Wonderful to cook dinner on
  • Light enough to bring along in the backpack
  • Suitable for use by children
  • Lasts a lifetime.
When someone accidentally steps on it, so it come to resemble a piece of modern abstract art, you merely push it back into shape, then keep on cooking.

Have but haven't used since I stopped my all day deer hunts, a 10X goose down lined hunting coat I bought back in the '70s. Wore it for thirty years and the outer shell is still good.

Even though some stuff may me a bit too expensive (IMO), as far as I know, Orvis has one of the most solid companies for supporting hunting and fishing.

Some of their gear is absolutely fantastic.

(Some of their gear just have the name...)

But, this company has been mostly family-owned (by a couple of different families, for the most part) since 1856.

The owners for the last 60 years (the Perkins family), is, one of the most ardently pro-fishing and pro-conservation company out there.

They are also, very much pro-hunting. They lean towards upland bird hunting, but, if they would turn some attention towards big-game hunting, I would absolutely, be a customer.

They sold Orvis-branded shotguns for many years.

I've been to a couple of their "gun rooms," and was very impressed.

They had some high-end rifles, the last time I visited.

I think Orvis, could capture much of the pre-1977 Abercrombie & Fitch market, if they wanted to shift a bit in that direction.

Orvis is really a unique company, in that they do business directly, have their own retail stores, as well as a large network of independent retailers who sell their products.

I know the fly-fishing retail community pretty well, and for several years during the 1990's, Orvis just rested on their reputation.

Now, they are, again, among the most innovative companies in the industry and put their name on some of the best products.

They also have a well-vetted outfitter service.

The Sitka ESW pants and shirts, the first version of them. I hunt whitetails maybe 60 days a year, plus turkeys in them. They have not had it easy, still using them after 15 years, look about good as new.

LOWA boots seem to be indestructible, I wore a hole through the bottom insoles. Not sure how many miles I have walked in them. But they are still trucking and have more than a few more hunts to go!

Over the last 5 years, I have discovered, and become a really big fan of Kenetrek boots.

Unlike most, I'm not a big fan of the 100 year-old technology of Courtney-type safari boots.
(I wore a pair for a couple of days, and just couldn't, for the life of me, understand what was supposed to be worth $400 about these "magic shoes"...)

(To me, $80, U.S. Army Desert Boots were superior in every way)

IMO, Kenetrek Safari's are the best African boots available. (Some would say that the sole is too stiff, but they work fine for me.)

Kenetrek Mountain Extremes are the best mountain hunting boot I've ever worn.

I've been using the same MSR Whisperlite stove since the Reagan Administration...

I like that which Ballistol can do, but the scent is... shall we say... not quite roses? Nor even yet Hoppes Number 9.

A great product - just don’t spray it on a firearm with gold embellishment . It will eat away the gold . I use it on most of my firearms .

Anything from 5.11 seems to be indestructible. Older iron free/travel shirts from Orvis and Cabela's.

Safe travels

Even their boots are bomb proof…

I’ve got a set of 511 hunting boots that I bought on a whim about 7 years ago.. they were on clearance at one of the 511 retail stores for something like $70 (typically retailed at $225 ish IIRC)… so I thought I’d give them a try…

7 hunting seasons later.. having taken them to Europe, Alaska, and other locales as well… they’re still going strong..

I’ll be wearing them all season this year as well…

They’re my “general purpose” boot.. whether hunting dove, deer, or pigs… out working on the property for the weekend, or just screwing around in the woods, they’re the boots I grab… I’m going to hate it when they finally give out on me… 511 discontinued them a few years ago.. had I known in advance I would have bought a few more pair just to put them on the shelf and have them in reserve for the future..

^^^^THIS^^^^ We need a thread for what we should have bought two. Seems like I find a boot or piece of clothing I really like and it gets discontinued.

Hi Lance, Hope you well. I collect Mauser rifles and they are very much part of my cultural history in Africa. Would you consider selling the rifle now a year on ? I'd like to place it in my collection of Mauser rifles. Many thx

I saw where you hunted elephant with backcountry safaris in Zimbabwe.
Was looking to book an elephant hunt and wanted to know how your hunt went
and if you would recommend them.

Thanks
Mike
hi, do you know about lions hunters, leopard hunters, and crocodiles hunters of years 1930s-1950s
I'm new to Africa Hunting. I would like to purchase a Heym 450-400 double rifle. I'm left-handed but would prefer a non-canted gun. Is anyone in the community considering parting with theirs?
