Pre-war Rigby 275 for sale, factory lettered

I'm putting up for sale a pre-war Rigby I bought here last Oct from one of our members. I had planned to do more with it but I would rather put the $ back into more hunts. It's in identical condition as when I bought it and has had no changes made to it. The only updates are getting the factory letter from Rigby and I had JJ go through the gun to verify the condition and check it over. Neat rifle priced way under what an uncut original would cost.

This is a prewar John Rigby & Co .275 Rigby delivered from the factory on Aug 13, 1929. It was originally a 25” barrel but has been cut down to a 22” barrel with ramp beaded front sight with two folding leaf express rear sights with leaves for 100 and 200 yards as well as the correct factory cocking piece mounted peep sight, which operates perfectly. It features a standard Mauser flag safety with “SAFE” inlaid in gold. The wood stock features an attractive leather covered recoil pad but the fore end has been cut down. It also appears that there was a side scope mount at one time and the holes were professionally filled. This is not evident from the outside of the action as they did a nice job but can be seen in the bolt runners (see pic). LOP is 13-1/2" to the end of the leather covered recoil pad and weight is 6.7 lbs. It’s in good condition with the exception of the cut down stock and barrel length. $6200

This is a great little Rigby rifle for someone that wants an original prewar that they can hunt with and use but not have to worry about. Good luck with the sale.

Will the rifle chamber 175 Grain cartridges?

It's factory regulated for HV 140's but I just checked some 156 and 158 and they chambered easily. I don't have any heavies on hand to check.

Beautiful rifle. I'd love it, been wanting a Rigby 275 as kind of my grail gun, however with my eyesight I need optics and It'd be sacrilege to do that to that rifle. Good luck with the sale, it should go well.

It's already been modified so scoping it won't matter.....and as stated it did have scope mounts in the past

I agree, it’s a friggin rifle. Chop the barrel, chop the stock, put a scope on it. This is a fine hunting tool. It’s built to be used. I really like the use marks. And blueing wear.

Agree fully except that I’m not a fan of side mounts. Which means the front base would be smacked right over the rigby markings on the front bridge.

Rigby did make a “High Velocity” version like this one for the 140gr bullet that featured better wood, a cut down forend, shorter stock, and shorter barrel. A very good example of what I’ve described just sold for a record price at Holt’s auction earlier this week. (See lot #1108)

To have so many features similar to the ladies gun described above, I’d suggest you ask Rigby to look through their records and see if they have record of doing the conversion when it was initially scoped.

Generally aftermarket changes just start hacking at things, the totality of the things done on this seems like it possibly was reworked by Rigby to be the ladies rifle they offered. Unless asked, Rigby may not have thought to look through their records to see if it was converted at time of sale or at some time thereafter.

Compare the above gun to yours…very similar.

Interesting and thanks for posting. When I asked Rigby for data on the serial, that's what came back in the letter. When I asked JJ what he thought about the gun, it was in good condition but had in his words, non-factory modifications. I just know it's the cheapest pre-war Rigby I have seen for sale and is a cool little gun.

I like it more than the longer barreled. Heavy fore end versions. If Rigby didn’t do the work. They should copy it in the future.
Even the new Rigby Field Ethos Rogue edition is pretty beefy for only .416

They have lightweight and ladies rifles in their historic collection at Rigby. A member here bought one bespoke for his wife and wrote an article about it that it appears on the Rigby website somewhere. I believe they took measurements off a historic gun of note for it and subsequent models.

The shortened forestock, shortened butt, shortened barrel is an actual thing at Rigby. The combo of all three is highly coincidental and merits digging to see if it was sent back to Rigby for this package of work.

Again, one that lettered from the factory in this configuration just set a record price at Holt’s that came out of an Italian family’s female line. Fogged unusable scope and all.
