Post your top five biggest African animals!

I haven't really measured any of mine, nor really care to, but I think these 5 are amongst my best-for-species.

I’ve only been to Africa once so I’m always really impressed by the adventures that the members of this community have had. I’ll be back. Heck I’d go back every year if I could. I’m not allowed to go by myself after the first trip. My family would disown me. Guess it’ll just take a few more years of saving before I go again. Only took 5 animals myself so here’s my top 5. All animals taken in Limpopo.

#1 Nyala. Taken the last afternoon. I spotted him before the PH did! Not sure how big he is but the PH suggested having him measure by SCI. Love the ivory tips and his teeth were nearly gone and the hair on his neck was getting thin. Proper old bull.

#2 Impala. Taken the first morning after an exciting stalk. Not sure how big but it was suggested that I have it measured. I just love the shape.

#3 kudu. Who doesn’t love kudu? Didn’t measure him. He’s mine. Good representative of the species I believe.

#4 Porcupine. Love porcupines and couldn’t turn this one down.

#5 warthog. Smaller boar. Happy to have taken him. Will look for a better one in the future.

Now the reason I am not allowed back to Africa by myself.

Daughter took some nice animals including two that the PH said we need to have measured. She also took a zebra, impala and springbok.

#1 Blesbok. The PH got excited about this one.

#2 steenbok. Big enough for a couple other PHs to have to ask “who kille that big steenbok?” Around the fire that night.

And my son killed a couple nice animals as well. His favorite was the warthog but now he wants to get a wildebeest slam.

#1 warthog.

#2 Blue Wildebeest.

@Elkeater great post! That nyala is an awesome trophy....old and in his last year probably. Proper trophy and very few would pass him up. Love that you posted your kid's animals also...your daughter's impala has very good mass...and her steenbok is very good.

The kids took some nice animals. That impala was heavy horned and a fair bit beat up. He actually had a split upper lip and nose from fighting and based on the fact that he was alone hiding in the brush I’m thinking he lost that fight.

No way was I passing on that Nyala. My favorite animal I took.

Exactly...that tells me you have had your face next to one. Hah. Unbelievable smell but what a cool little bad ass beast.

Third safari Aug 2024 - only after old animals this time around.
We stalked buff for 4 1/2 days - kept getting busted by swirling winds and crunchy leaves and seeing some very nice big bulls but they weren’t quite old enough. Managed to sneak up on this old buff - shot in the thick Mopani at 25 yards quartering towards me - 375HH 300 AFrame.
First eland hunt, better part of 5 days trying to get on one. Track, stalk - busted and repeat. could have shot multiple younger bulls but wanted a nice old guy with character - got a quartering running shot and was able to connect - one shot with 375HH 300 Aframe.
This was my second sable - sneaky old rascal that took many miles of tracking to finally get a shot on. Swirling winds and he kept circling around and outsmarting us - finally caught up to him at the end of a long day.

Love the eland and sable…very nice results from that hunt!

Hello, sorry for the poor quality photos. This was my first and only Safari to Africa back in 1997. We hunted the North West Province, S.A and then Mozambique which had recently been reopened to hunting after the end of their civil war. I believe the springbok, Blesbok, Red Hartebeest and Black Wildebeest made SCI minimum.

The Mozambique hunt was quite an adventure although perhaps somewhat of a disaster. PH got kicked out of concession, couple intense encounters with the Mozambique police, Safari vehicles broke down, camp staff went on strike had a little mini revolt, so we just made the best of it and hunted on foot. Hippo was taken in the Save River with couple body shots with 416 Rem Mag, 400 SAF. Nearby village later descended and were happy for the hippo meat. Plains game all taken in SA with 300 Win Mag, 180 Winchester Fail Safe.

So, 27 years later, back to Africa again in less than two weeks and again in 2026 for Cape buffalo.

Hello, My wife and I hunted with Marius 2 years ago. He fit us into his schedule after a different outfitter "bailed" on us. He was always very good with communications and although we didn't end up meeting him personally, he called us multiple times during our hunt to make sure things were going well. We were very happy with him.

Reach out to the guys at Epic Outdoors.

They will steer you right for landowner tags and outfitters that have them.

I have held a membership with them for years and they are an invaluable resource.

Way better that asking random people on the internet...WAY better

Skydiver386,

Did you ever find your 30-06 CZ550? I own a fairly solid conditioned one, if you wanted to talk.
