I admire innovation and imagination in the conduct of war. Thus far, the Ukrainians have shown a graduate level aptitude for its application. Russia, on the other hand, seems mired in tactical and operational capabilities that would have been right at home at the Somme or Ypres. Overnight, the Ukrainian armed forces carried that innovation to a new level.

They have repurposed a rather large commercial UAV (drone for you civilians) as a kamikaze munition. It has the range to fly from the area around Odessa to the Russian naval base in Sevastopol Crimea. It is fairly slow and crude, and is likely easily detected and engaged. We have now have learned that Ukraine has also built a surface "drone" that is essentially a speed boat with satellite coms (likely Star Link) and forward looking cameras that allow man in the loop engagement for the final run.

It looks to me that they used the UAVs to distract the port defense system and ran the kamikaze boats in through all the confusion. Brilliant. The videos clearly show two frigates at the point of being struck - one in the aft third amidships and the other in the stern. I would assume damage similar to what the USS Cole experienced. Both will be out of this war for its duration.

Ilana Mercer has a good article at TownHall.com today called "The Party of Perverts".
But I guess the title pretty much says it all.

the suicide boat drones are old news as one washed up off Crimea in September
nothing new here, no game changer but they do seem simple and effective if undetected

and the new Ukraine kamikaze drones you are explaining about, l dont understand why would the Ukrainians need them if the US has been supplying Ukraine with Switchblade drones since march?

l understand Russia has caused quite a stir because they have been using Kamikaze drones but really, why? if both side's are using them? l did find humour in watching one of these Russian drones take out two sam missile instillations at once

l suppose we are just going to be seeing drone wars LOL cheaper than Himars

while l am at it, can anyone explain the white cross decal the Ukrainians are using on there tanks ect... that looks like Wehrmacht markings, with all the carry on about the Ukrainians Azov battalion and nazi affiliations why would you use this symbol?

Happy to explain - ignorance, willful or otherwise, should be addressed everywhere. Is this where I am supposed to insert a “LOL”?

Let us start with drones? Yes, Ukraine has drones from the US or more properly loitering munitions. The Switchblade comes in two forms - one with a small fragmentation warhead - think flying grenade, and the other with a shaped charge capable of penetrating an armored vehicle. They are very effective and killing Russians daily, but don’t have the range for an operational mission like striking Sevastopol or doing much damage could they get there. The commercial conversion does, and has been effective destroying targets such as fuel depots beyond the range of HIMARS.

The real revolution Ukraine is leading is using UAVs to direct responsive and incredibly accurate artillery fires. With perhaps a tenth the artillery platforms of the Russian army, they have rested control of that aspect of the battlefield as well.

Yes, one of the boats of the type likely used in the attack washed ashore in September, but this was their first operational use. And even after having one in hand, the Russians had developed no counter measures. Perhaps I should enter another LOL? I am not sure it is a ”game changer” either, but if the BDA is accurate, Russia has lost its second flagship and two most modern cruise missile platforms for the duration of the war - rather woeful naval performance against a foe that doesn’t have a navy. LOL. Or maybe I am the only one who finds that funny.

Yes, Russia is acquiring drones from Iran and receiving training from the Revolutionary Guard on how to use them. That is so embarrassing for a “great power” they won’t even admit it. LOL.

I suspect the cross was chosen for two reasons. With both sides using the same basic combat platforms, it was a clear alternative to the ”Z” marking Russian vehicles, or the symbols marking the now largely exterminated VDV. Secondly, the Cossack Cross which is shaped like the cross marking current Bundeswhere military equipment is part of the coats of arms of all the Ukrainian armed forces. Not sure I get your point.

Russia is being defeated on the battlefield by a nation with one third its population. They have become so desperate they are throwing newly mobilized men into the fight with little to no training using out dated equipment - T62’s for Christ’s sake - where they are little more than cannon fodder. I would not be surprised if the whole rotten military house of cards doesn’t begin to collapse over the next couple of months as winter truly begins.

Forced to buy UAVs from Iran …… can’t make it up! :E Lol:

Man you hate the Ruskies Red Leg, its a real pure deep down hatred, may cause a biased opinion
l do appreciate the response seeing that you are happy to explain - ignorance, wilful or otherwise
and it is especially pleasing that you got so many LOL's added in, LOL, l always like to see people happy in what they are doing LOL, to be honest l haven't had such a good laugh for ages and you were having a really good time writing it out
as l said it looks like we will be seeing drone wars LOL
but anyway
one thing l would like to take a little further is your explanation of "the cross", l can see an argument for using a symbol that identifies you to friendly fire and could even see an argument for using a symbol to stick it up the Russian propaganda machine that is painting your side as nazi"s and claims it is de-nazifying the country
but yea naaaa the Ukrainians are not using the official emblem of Ukraine's armed forces that includes the countries coat of arms in the centre that was adopted in September 2009

the Cossack cross you talk about, The isosceles cross is an important part of the symbolism of the Ukrainian state, and it dates back to Cossack times. It was part of the coat of arms of the founder of the first Cossack Sich, Dmytro Vyshnevetsky, also known as Baida. It was located on the flag of the Zaporozhian Sich in the form of a white isosceles cross, the arms of which widen at the ends.

A very similar cross can also be seen on the Cossack flag from the mid-seventeenth century.

KTyGDOX.jpg

l cannot see in any of the photo's ect... an attempt at widening at the ends of the arms of the cross's anywhere
l also cannot see an explanation for the use of the Wehrmacht Balkenkreuz symbol used as it is nothing like the Cossack cross or the official emblem of Ukraine's armed forces

dmXOyzb.png

l dont see using the cross as the Ukrainian's being seriously nazi, my point was that Ukraine being the "good guys" wouldn't it be better not to attract a bad image but l do see the humour in it as l have seen posts on here where the Russians were described as "the Commies" and then "Nazi's"
now that is something to LOL about dont you think

This statement is inconsistent with @Red Leg interaction with Russian members of the forum before this cultural genocide. It's not accurate. His posts certainly favour victory for Ukraine. I hope so too. And I hope the people of Ukraine rescue their kidnapped children, reunite their families, reclaim the history that has been pillaged, rebuild their cities, and give a proper burial to all those civilians rotting in mass graves. I also hope the country can address any extremists that always flourish in times of chaos. These challenges will required a lot of support from the West. I look forward to us being involved in that. I foresee medical personnel, ex-pats, business, academics and those moved by the injustice of it all moving there in a mutually beneficial relationship. It will be heartbreaking to witness. But, along with reparations from Russia, it will be possible.

Perhaps it is the cross of Saint George, which forms part of the (Royal Navy's) White Ensign?

This would be appropriate, as Mad Vlad is crediting the Royal Navy with the attack on the Sevastopol harbour. During the Crimean war, the British (and French) captured Sevastopol and blew up the docks, so it would just be a case of history repeating!

I saw you were looking for some Swift A-Frames for your 9.3. I just bought a bulk supply of them in the 285g. version. If Toby's are gone, I could let 100 go for $200 shipped you are interested.
Thanks,
Gary
