Friends,

I'm just drinking my second full glass of Slivovitz (eastern European brandy) so my cogent thoughts are limited. Why Slivo? Because it represents European moonshine that was made with self reliance on a rural farm from whatever stone fruits they had in their orchards. (in my case, its plum based white liquor)

Why am I drinking it? I left southern Wisconsin by dropping out of high school with a 0.43 GPA having been informed that I didn't have what it takes to pursue higher learning. I was 17, I sold all my possessions, I harnessed my capital into two cheap suits, $750 in cash, and I headed for Chicago to try to find my way in life since my prospects for a brighter tomorrow were damned limited. I had a 5-year plan to make a few bucks, save away, and come back to Wisconsin with enough money to own a piece of land to enjoy fishing, hunting, and all things local community.

Well, the 5-year plan took 25 years to accomplish. I got a few consulting gigs, then my career progressed to the point of teaching grad students on the side. Then I did nationwide consulting. Then I picked up an MBA and started serving companies as an executive. All the while, getting out of socialist hellhole Illinois was on the forefront of my mind every day for 25 years.

My Sh*tty Illinois house sold today. I lost $350k on it over 15 years in this toxic hellhole of a State. I have a good job that allows me to hop a plane for work. I'm buying 30+ acres of virgin forest and prairie in Wisconsin with 1300' of prime trout fishing frontage in two weeks. I'm moving my family to a place that believes in two genders, hard work, and kindness towards their neighbors. I should have my little slice of paradise paid off in a year or so with 70% down payment.

Yep. I'm overserved, happier than I've been in 25 years, and I did it. I got the good Chicago job, plotted my career, plotted my escape, and I'm getting the hell out of here!

So now you know why I'm drinking the official drink of most of the Wisconsin settlers and so damned gleeful about leaving the woke leftism of Illinois permanently.

The only concern I have left in the world is if my less informed neighbors start to vote for the same policies that destroyed Illinois and created a 25-year cage for me to escape in the process. Lets hope the rural states reject leftist thinking and solve their problems as neighbors rather than as authoritarians with central control over all thought.

Cheers!

Congratulations, unfortunately a lot of that crap from the city is creeping into the rural areas, people buy up land and bring there attitudes with them, not all but enough that you notice areas slowly changing.

Congratulations, well done on your plan my friend!

Absolutely. California has set up franchises in Idaho, Colorado, and Arizona. I'm hoping Wisconsin is resistant to an Illinois franchise of socialism and hate. I trust my neighbors, never my government. Lets hope that rural America stays common sense and we look after our fellow Americans.

Montana has certainly changed in the 30 years that I have been gone, just the other night I was taking about my views of politics and my distaste for having all of the wokeness rammed down my throat to a friend and the bartender when an import from Portland decided to interject himself into my conversation. After slapping him like the whining little bitch that he was I think he decided to not participate in my conversation any more. I believe that this world needs to revert back to how it was, it used to be the mantra “don’t let your tiger mouth override your hummingbird ass”. People were less likely to give you a “lesson” in Political Correctness back then due to it made them quite sore when they woke up. Maybe I need to start looking into Alaska Property!

Congratulations. I'm sure you made the right move. Definitely sounds like paradise to me. I'm hopeful that the current global wokeness will disintegrate as more people have to come to terms with reality, especialy as economies retract and socialism is yet again shown to be fraud.

I would have considered Montana but I've had nothing but negative interactions my whole life with Montana people. Do I hate them? NOT ONE BIT. Did they treat me rudely out of fear I was a big-city leftist coming to ruin their State? Yes. Full respect for them. They reserve the right to be wary of urban outsiders. They are good people scared sh!tless over what a non-resident interloper might represent.

Congratulations! Seems like they’re trying to California my Texas by the day.
The correct term is Californicate. Here, it's Colocalifornicate. It's really too late for us here.

In Montana the people from rural Montana treat the people from the “big cities” of Bozeman and Missoula the same way, it has always been like that, it is a different place for sure.

Congratulations, I can only imagine the feeling. I’d really love to move to western New York State. There is a lot of land for sale relatively cheap and much less development than Pennsylvania. Republican signs in everyone’s yards there, but sadly NYC controls their state.

Slivovitz! One of my good friends in high school was Yugoslavian. At his wedding, we did shots of that nasty stuff. It definitely is the white lightning of Eastern europe. Congrats on your move though.

The current election will be an indication of how far Californication has progressed in Texas. I envy you your slice of paradise. Can you recommend a good brand of slivovitz.

Happy for you! Been running my own machine shop for a while. Buying some doubles and other toys. We are ok in Ohio for now, still work to be done though. years back my boss gave me some wierd parts to make, thought it was a govt. job, it was. The Romanian machinist I worked with need some new parts for his still. That winter I received a couple pints of home distilled Slivovits. That stuff burned bright blue, cured all sorts of ailments too!

That, my friend, was a fantastic example of following a dream. Congratulations. Unlike you I skipped the big city opportunities/money and moved my broke ass to one of the most rural areas of West Virginia 20 years ago and never regretted a second of it. I hope u enjoy your time in the sticks as much as I have.

Welcome back brother! ;) Maybe now you’ll be a little closer for that beer we’ve been talking about for couple of years now.

Congratulations @rookhawk I know you and the family will love the country living. I’m so glad you will have somewhere for the kids to hunt.
Realize however you were in the very worst part of Illinois. Down here it is very pleasant. The largest town in the county has 4300 people, and local politics run as they should. There is plenty of good hunting and farming.
Chicago is a thorn in our side, but life is good.

Hi Jon,
I saw your post for the .500 NE cases. Are these all brass or are they nickel plated? Hard for me to tell... sorry.
Thanks,
