We are booked through Luthansa , but flying through Air Canada. I cant get a straight answer on how the ammo is handled from either one. Is it checked baggage or carry on???? Thanks in advance

I used a box that I was comfortable having go separately as its own piece, but I could fit it in my luggage.

If the airline said out it in, I put it in. And, if they said leave it out, I left it out. On the trip I was told both at different times! Lol

Put it in a hard locked case and put in regular luggage.....NOT IN RIFLE CASE AND MOST DEFINITELY NOT CARRY ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you are flying into RSA i.e. Johannesburg the box carrying the ammo must have a lock on it. Even if it was put in your luggage.

Yes that is important too.

Also, if you are catching a connecting flight within South Africa on SAA, your ammo will have to be in a separate locked container and cannot go in your luggage.

This depends on who you get at the counter, in Joburg last year I asked if they wanted the ammo out of my checked luggage, they said why would we. First time in years they didn’t want it out.

Haha fair enough...we've got away with it in luggage a couple times as well but best to be prepared. The only rule of flying with guns and ammo in Africa is that there are no consistent rules!

We were fine going down to Port Elizabeth on SAA, but coming back the check in clerk at Port Elizabeth told us to pull it out of the luggage. Then once in Joberg we put it back in for the flight back to the states on SAA.

To the OP make sure that your box has some kind of handle on it where you can tape the airline luggage tag through it. It won't hurt to also have a spare luggage tag to stick on it also.

If you’re transiting through Amsterdam I believe you need a permit for there as well.

You should not need it if your firearms (and you) are checked through to your final destination.

I've never removed a bolt.
The most I've ever been asked: "Is it unloaded?"

100% you need a Dutch transit permit for your firearms even if checked right through. No knives or broadheads in luggage either!!

A few airlines have it as a rule now...Air Canada for sure. And trigger locked!

The customs officer in Vancouver General noted that my bolt was installed in the gun and said "Funny you made it this far.... next time - remove the bolt" . I said "Yes sir."

That’s your problem right there Vancouver. I never remover my bolt and come through customs in Edmonton or Calgary 2-3 times a year, never has anything been said about it.

Nice Report! Im about to pull the trigger on booking the LDE with Patrick. I have been talking about it with him for about 3 yrs now. Romain hit me up the other day with an offer I can't refuse for 2027.

Andrew, I commented that your on 375 H&H for sale was the fair price.

Like I commented, my classic stainless has the original 24” barrel.

Did you buy yours with the barrel already cut down to 21” or did you do it (or a gunsmith)?
