New to me Ruger No. 1 S in .35 Whelen!

Scott, you are going to love that rifle. "Stoke" it properly with CFE 223 or IMR 4064 using a 225 Gr. projectile and you will be right there with Bob and me touting the performance of this caliber.

Just to give an idea what we have here. No. 1 S is the medium rifle with 24" barrel that measures .675" at the muzzle, so a good size. All other features same as any S stock wise.
Stock on this one is fairly attractive, no figure on most late No.1's and no exception here, but the color is nice, straight with some fiddleback in the buttstock and forearm color is a good match as well.
LOP with the added Pachy Decelerator pad is 14 & 3/8ths inches. Its a good length for me, and pad was done properly.
I mounted a Nikon 3-9x40 that came off another rifle just sold, but this scope has been a good one and should work well here, had to use an extender ring in the back so it could come back far enough so I dont have to stretch my recently whiplashed neck so far! Yep, got rear ended on the 4th of July! About 95 percent normal now but was pretty sore for a few days.
Weight with scope is an even 9#.

Headspace looks good, lacking any gauges, I inked some shoulders of some factory rounds and I can see they touch it inside. Somehow over the years I have amassed a fair amount of factory fodder in this caliber, having mostly Rem, probably 8 boxes, 4 boxes of Hornady Superformance, and one box of Federal with 225 gr Trophy Bonded bullets in nickel cases, still a full box, hate to shoot them!
I know I posted one pic here earlier but here is a couple more.

@sestoppelman
Very nice. Now you have a strong modern rifle you can try some speer 250gr loads as well as some of the ones I use. It would be enlightening.

Great rifle in a great cartridge. I had the best success with Re15 and 250gr bullets in the 35 Whelen. In my experience, the larger caliber Ruger #1's shoot between good and great. I currently have them in 450/400 and 9.3x74R and both of them shoot great.

Safe shooting!

That has been my experience as well. Had them in 9.3x74, .450-400, .405 Win and many others in smaller calibers, but the big ones seem to shoot without much fuss.

I'm late to this party, but dang... Nice score Scott.

I hope it shoots well for you!!

I too am late to the party, but I really appreciate your approach to giving us the particulars. I am always curious about the weights of the barrels on the various iterations of the rifles.

I like the look of your rifle with the what appears a heavier barrel profile than the the 22" below it. The distributor models come out with some real gems at times and this looks like a fine example of one.
I could see myself obtaining a #1 in .375 H and H or maybe a .458WM someday. But, I see these guys with #1s in the Lott (Forrest Halley) and .416 Rigby cartridges, and there's NO WAY I would want to shoot one, let alone own one. But I see them for sale at a premium all the time. I have those cartridges in my CZ 550s, and they're enough recoil for me in the heavier CZ rifles? Guess I'm a recoil wimp!
Mark,
I'll load you some 400 grain loads to play with if you're ever out this way.
I haven't fired the big ones either, but I can say the 375H&H with that chunky Tropical barrel is a real sweet spot item - great looks, great balance, great performance.
I have admired the Tropical models ever since I was a child. Now that I'm a child with a job, I have procured a .375 H&H and a .458 Lott. I am very happy with their appearance and function. I don't favor the A and B weight barrels as much, but a C weight barrel looks fine in 22" on out. I think my D weight barrel on the Lott would look better at 26" as it looks now next to the .375, it's a sewer pipe.
This configuration that Scott has makes the .35 look substantial next to it which I also appreciate. I suppose it's a mental aspect of "Well if we're going to only take one shot, it might as well be a mighty one."

Does anyone know how many of these were made? I came across one, and the seller is claiming it’s rare.

Which version is it? There were 3 I believe.
The No 1-A light sporter, possibly a K1-A, the stainless light sporter and the 1-S medium sporter with 24" barrel, which is what I have.
All are more or less rare or at least not common.

It’s a 1-s with the medium barrel. I can’t find anything for sale to do a price check, and idea what a fair price is?

Not having seen it I cant really say, I got mine a couple of years ago for $1300 but all No.1's have gone up since then. Its a pretty rare rifle though and to my mind the best version by far especially if one wants to go full 'Bob Whelen' with one, LOL.
Mine had already been retrofitted with a nice thick soft pad so recoil isnt an issue, but surely would be with the typical thin pad Ruger alleges to be a recoil pad.

If its not priced stupid I would snag it.

my blue ruger # 1 in 35 whelen has a 22" barrel and i think its a S, serial number is134-29286. i don,t remember when i bought it as i had 12-13 #1s and it may have been in a group buy.
Probably an A, the S has a 24" medium weight barrel.

And let us know when you get it home, and pics of course.. LOL.

And queens are to be oiled and rubbed down as necessary. Pleasure has many faces!
@Kevin Peacocke
I don't know much about queens mate but my little princess (wife) enjoys being oiled and rubbed down as necessary.

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?
