NAMIBIA: My Hunt With Frontier Safaris (Barry Burchell Property)

I hope the high school friend talks about this hunt. He is a member and he has strong opinions about this, I'm hunting with him again in September at game4africa.

Brandon what are you going after in September??

Black wildebeest, burchell zebra, I have the mountain zebra from Namibia, then anything the bush offers!

Charlie, I hope some day to hunt with you, I believe your company would be great!

Ok day 2 from memory, I might miss some details, I apologize if I do. We hunted hard all day, never had an opportunity. Seen many kudu females, a few gemsbok, nothing worthy of a stalk, late afternoon, got on spoor of blue wildebeest. Hunt is on! Running out of daylight, we finally spotted then late in the day. We stalked close to them. I'm ready!
Ph picks out a animal, tells me that's the one. Now I'm a newbie to Africa so I'm listening to him. But I knew the one he told me was not the biggest. I could see a lot bigger one a few animals in front of the one he said. I asked him if he was sure, he said yes that one. Running out of daylight, I shot the one he said. It dropped, congrats we're happening. Went up to the animal, and apologies started again, female small horned wildebeest. Needless to say I knew better, should of shot the big one I seen.

Day 3 from memory, my ph was sick as a dog, we sat all day in a hide. I did not want this. I wanted to walk and stalk. I sit in a stand here in Wisconsin, cuz you can't walk and stalk. Well my ph was sleeping almost the whole time but the tracker was there with his eyes. And he was good, I have to say. Nothing but birds, some type of hens? I'd know if someone said the names. Anyway, after sitting there for hours on end the tracker says warthogs, they come in. My ph wakes up and says shoot that 1. I knew which one he was saying as it was the biggest one. Well I shot it. We went to collect it and... the same story, sorry, it's a female. Small tusk female. I don't know warthogs so I trusted his call. Now I'm really starting to worry about this hunt.
Got back to the boma and I asked the camp manager if I'm on a cull hunt. I felt like I was.

If I remember right, this was the day the bowhunter, hunting by himself, shot a one curl kudu, he was happy as it was a big animal, and he's only hunted white tails. The camp manager then put the donkey fire guy in his stand to judge Size!

I am sorry going off memory, I will correct the days and events once I get home, if these aren't correct

This sounds horrific. Terrible trophy judgement.

Its unfortunate to hear how this hunt is unfolding.

Having a PH tell you to shoot females, young animals, broken horns, etc. really isn't acceptable on a trophy hunt. I hope they gave you massive discounts or refunds on the trophy fees- no way I would pay full price for damaged horns, single-curl kudu, or females.

Regarding the warthog, that's an inexcusable mistake. There are significant visual differences between male/female that any PH would immediately recognize.

Umm this doesn't sound good. In fact not having a PH is disgusting. You PH is no bargain either. He doesn't seem to be able to see very well........ Bruce

Hello brandondd24,

I'm sorry to read about your experiences with this outfit.

About 14 or 15 years ago, I hunted with "Burchell Safaris" as they were known then.

It was not good.

Fast forward to April - 30 - 2017, when I wrote a reply to fellow member Eeleel, about this specific safari company.

In which, I said that Barry Burchell only visited camp and did no guiding for myself or my hunting partner.

However, I also pointed out that Burchell Safaris had reportedly been sued by several angry clients, (perhaps 8 or 10 years ago ?) over what amounted to "bait and switch" tactics.

I did not join that law suit but was indeed tempted to do so.
However, it was Barry's brother in law I had disappointment with (not an owner, only an employee).
Plus, I get annoyed by all the law suits in this world and so, I decided after all to not join in.

Now that I see Burchell Safaris is reportedly still up to their same old tricks, I expect I should have signed on with the other victims.
Hind sight is always 20-20.

Again, I encourage anyone considering this safari company to try and find the law suit details, presuming they are available somewhere on the internet.
And then, you can reach your own conclusions on Burchell Safaris, or whatever name they go by these days.

Cheers,
Velo Dog.

Cant wait for, As Paul Harvey would say "The Rest of the Story"

Your a heck of a nice fella because i would be irate if I were you. I've done semi guided, (packed in) elk hunts that were better organized than this sounds. Hope your next hunt is all you wanted this one to be.

Isn't this the outfitter Boddington endorses ?
