Johnnyblues. No lottery win needed. Just keep your eyes and ears open. A gorgeous DR can be found for less than a custom bolt action (so long as you don't need something for the big 5 which lets face it is a pipe dream for most) DR up to 9.3 can be had for much less that lottery money.
The hunt is half the fun right?
Just keep looking...

Beautiful double... congrats and straight shooting with it!!!

Wonderful looking rifle and a great story!
Congratulations!

You make the rest of us dream and drool... ;-)

I came back to this thread just to look at the pictures again. Man what a beautiful rifle.
+1 on the drool.

+2 on the drool!

@Opposite Pole did you purchase a hard side case to go with this rifle and if so where?

Oh, gun cases and gun leather :Cigar:. The rifle came in a factory plastic case with an extra case for the second barrel. I've also ordered a leather covered rifle case from Krieghoff, I'm pretty sure they said it was made by Alba. While I was waiting for the rifle to be delivered I bought a buffalo leather soft gun bag from African Sporting Creations. The cartridge holders and cartridge belt are from Galco.

Thank you sir they look great!

I would never check-in any of the above for plane travel. For that I've got a Pelican 1750 with custom cut foam. I just need to have the bottom part remade/adjusted for my double instead of my shotgun. With this setup I feel safe that any accidental mishandling short of being run over by a truck won't get my guns damaged. Purposeful mishandling is a different story, but I don’t think any rifle case can save us from issues in such a case.

That leather range case is a beautiful way to transport locally your double.
I am trying to decide now how I want to proceed at this point. Getting all the advice and pictures I can.

Yeah the leather case looks and feels great. Whenever I go to the range that's what I use. For hunting I use the soft bag, no point in taking the gun apart and bringing nice case into the 4wd which being a dedicated hunting car is usually somewhat dirty.

It's windy, rainy and cool outside. I'd like to go hunting and try to get a boar but since my 4wd is being serviced I can't. So having made some very nice (if I may say so myself) roe deer tartare from a doe I shot two weeks ago I've decided to take some close up pictures of the engravings on my rifle using camera rather than phone. Being absolutely unable to produce any art myself I am in awe that a person can chisel by hand such detailed images.

The engravings of the elephant's head and the cats are size of my thumb nail. I apologise for poor picture quality, macro photography is not my forte.

Pure art.... Enjoy the rifle.

So last week, after a year’s worth of waiting, my double rifle was finally ready for a pick up from the dealer.

It all started one bloody hot day in Australia’s Northern Territory. I was on a buffalo hunt and in addition to using my Blaser R8 in 375H&H, the outfitter offered me to have a go with his double Merkel in 470 N.E. (damn you Matt, you cost me loads of money!). I have never handled a double and considered them to be something of a curiosity and a relic of the past. This all changed the moment I handled the gun. I loved how it pointed and how easy it came on the target, how fast and surprisingly accurate the open sights were. After shooting it at a target I realised that the recoil was easily controllable and not anywhere near as fierce as I feared. Later that day I shot a buffalo with it and this sealed my fate – right there and then I knew I had to get me one of those.

And so few years have passed, I have moved between continents but the obsession didn’t go away. Finally I’ve decided to order one. I knew I absolutely needed to get a classic nitro express calibre for Africa and Australia. However the impracticality of such a cartridge for European game was just too obvious to ignore and so I’ve gotten two barrel sets for it: 470 N.E. and 9.3x74R. I visited the factory and had the stock made to measure and it fits me really well. So well in fact that I now know I will have to get a new shotgun stock made, or get a new shottie altogether (signs of an addiction perhaps?). The difference between a well fitted gun and “standard dimensions” is unbelievable. I knew fit was important but didn’t realise just what a difference it makes, and I am what one would call a regular sized guy.

The standard front bead is tiny and only good for target practise

However there is a large and clear pop up front bead that is easy to see, quick to use and appears to be staying up once opened

50m (55yds) off hand. The two holes covered with black stickers are 9.3x74R the remaining four 470 N.E. I have to get plenty of practise before I can hunt with it because I'm very slow with the open sights - I was shooting scoped rifles from day one.

Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
To much to political shit, to little Africa :-)
Spending a few years hunting out west then back to Africa!

Hello. If you haven't already sold this rifle then I will purchase. Please advise. Thank you.

I doubt you are interested in any trades but I was getting ready to list a Sauer 404 3 barrel set in the 10-12 price range if your interested. It has the 404J, 30-06 and 6.5 Creedmoor barrel. Only the 30-06 had been shot and it has 7 rounds through it as I was working on breaking the barrel in. It also has both the synthetic thumbhole stock and somewhere between grade 3-5 non thumbhole stock
