My Covid vaccination experience

45 days ago an old friend wanted to come visit the farm. We rode around for half a day checking the crop. The conversation eventually turned to covid and the vaccine...it always does. That's when he told me that his son had convinced him that between the side effects and the unknown long term effects of the vaccine, he had chosen not to get it. I did not attempt to convince him otherwise...that was his choice.

20 days ago the delta variant caught up with him.

2 days ago he passed away. He was 69, in pretty darn good health, due to fully retire this fall, and no longer needs to worry about what the long term effects of a vaccine might be. It's a bitter pill.

Very sorry to hear that Randy. I lost one of my best friends to this damn thing in January. He was within two months of getting the vaccine when he came down with it.

My mother who is 80 has an appointment on Monday at SUNY Albany.
I, being her caregiver, have an appointment Saturday.

Note I said we have appointments as NY is claiming they will run out of their available vaccine stock today.
They are using the Moderna vaccines.

As for symptoms, a doctor told me that it's usually the second dose that gives 'symptoms.' I have also heard that if you have recovered from covid already you would have a reaction. No idea is that is true.

The vaccine only protects you and you could still be a carrier? I had not heard that. Not saying I don't believe it, I just didn't know as my main reason getting it is so as not to infect mom.

Food for thought that my daughter sent. Do the math. She is a nurse for UCHEALTH. She has cared for lots of COVID patients. We all got the Moderna vaccine and so far, no issues.

My pregnant daughter-in-law got Pfizer and was not so lucky. She is sick but doing okay and just tested positive on Friday and had to cancel the baby shower on Saturday. My wife flew from CO to NY and it was all cancelled. Damn COVID!

My fairly healthy 91yoa mother had both vaccines (don't remember brand) awhile ago. First one made her slightly ill, but the second one no issues. Kind of odd? It seems the older one is, the vaccine symptoms tend to be less severe due to a weaker immune system in general. Obviously, both the virus(s) and the vaccine(s) symptoms affect people differently. From what I understand, you can still carry the virus in your sinuses and be asymptomatic even if you've had the virus and/or have been vaccinated. Thus, positive tests pop up all the time for both classes of people. It may be a small percentage, but fuels my reluctance to test positive while on a trip out of the country somewhere and be quarantined for 14 days. I personally am still working and don't have the time to take a month off from work.

That’s a real shame! I’m glad she’s doing OK though. Events can be rescheduled. Tough for a baby shower though?

Same as fluvaccine, it only protects you, you can still be a carrier.

They are not rescheduling the baby shower. Not the end of the world but COVID also delayed and shrunk their wedding to only 20 people last year so she’s fit to be tied and tired of this COVID crap. She’s feeling better today than yesterday so I think she will get past COVID okay.

I got the Moderna booster yesterday at 6pm. Feeling fine so far this morning. One reason I decided to get vaccinated is because I come into contact with lots of people from all over the country that fly and drive to Colorado and I can’t get sick and cancel hunts I am guiding. That happened to some other outfitters in Colorado last year. Another reason was my personal African hunting trip schedule that I don’t want to miss. I did my Botswana ele hunt last June and am scheduled for Zambia in July 2022 and Tanzania in November 2023. I think variants are going to continue to pop up.

Covid is endemic now. It is not going anywhere. Mitigate risk as fits your needs.

the pernicious part of what’s happening now will become more apparent when more and more people are vaxxed. It needs to happen quicker.

Just FYI. I talked to my doctor last week to go over my blood test result. She is asking if I got my booster. I told her I prefer not to since I have a severe reaction after the Moderna second shot. She said that I can wait until I turn 65. She said Moderna is a little stronger than Pfizer which explains my friends that got Covid after the jabs were taking Pfizer.

I was in to see my doc today for my usual checkup. I got the two penny lecture on getting the jab. Told him I was still in wait and see mode, not totally closed to the idea, but not sure its really necessary with my lifestyle and exposure risks.
Funny thing is, maybe not so funny for him or me, is that he was coughing while I was in the room with him. We were both masked up for all that good that will do.
Wouldnt it be ironic to get the crud from your own doc while he is lecturing you to get the jab when obviously he already has?

Docs and nurses are at high risk due to caring for sick people and therefore, could pass something to other patients. I don’t see the irony. It’s not uncommon and that’s why they were among the first groups to get vaccinated to protect themselves and patients. As I have said before, my daughter cares for CV patients at our local hospital and about 98% of those patients are not vaccinated

I got some bad news today about a close friend of 35 years who teased me about getting the shots. He was evacuated by helicopter a few days ago from his home in the mountains. His condition has worsened and he is now on a ventilator and unconscious. He thought he was insulated from COVID by living in a remote area. His ex wife came up for a visit (they only divorced because she couldn’t live up there anymore and he wouldn’t leave) and gave him COVID. She was on a ventilator and is now off it and in a rehab hospital. Perhaps you should reevaluate your belief that you are also insulated from COVID. We don’t always agree on everything on this forum but I would hate for you to get sick. We agree more than we disagree about most things in life.

None of the vaccines offer 100% efficacy so there are breakthrough cases from them all. Moderna is a stronger dose and may have less breakthrough cases but they still happen.

My sister is pretty sure she caught her break-thru covid during a recent eye exam.
