Love or Hate for the 458 Winchester

Good question but we know that there are many game rangers out on there on there own for Dangerous Game Control with a 458 WinMag and have been for many decades…
A “game ranger” shoots what ever rifle is assigned to him and the 3 or 4 cartridges given to him.

Normally ammo is purchased by game dept. once a year. They purchase what ever they can purchase.

I wonder how many will go with a 458 winmag and hunt DG WITH OUT A PH Backing them. How many will with something more poweful. Again how many have stoped a nasty charge og DG with a 458 win mag.
Krish
I stopped a buffalo that was charging my PH. Don't know how many others have stopped charges of DG with a .458, but I would guess it's been quite a few.

...I have a very good friend who is a P/H in Zimbabwe and has been relying on a .458WM for back up on dangerous game for going on thirty years. The majority of his clients are hunting elephant/buffalo. Obviously the .458WM continues to do the job or he would have opted for a better (?) stopper.

Just saying...
Would he still choose it if other calibers and rifles where readily availible? It is not like you can walk into the Harare gunshop and order what you want like at Safari and Outdoor in RSA.....
Just asking....

If it works, it works... there is always something bigger, but enough is simply that... enough. A full load with a 500 grain bullet out of a .458 WM is enough.

...Well IvW, I know he had the option to choose some other caliber, he chose the .458WM. I know that for a fact, since I was the one having Gene Simillian build the rifle for him.

yes,but it has to do the job, nothing else.

For my wife and myself .470N, .404, .450-.400.

Campfire .375 H&H, .458 & sometimes .458 Lott. For campfire what ever mfg. they can get. Recently they shot 6 ele recovered 2 or 3. I respect those that insist on proper bullet placement as long as it has proper penetration.

I will not write what I think a client plans on writing. I will say that we recently had a ele hunt and Hornady will be receiving a not so nice letter concerning .458 WM DGX. In this case client & PH using .458 WM.

.458WM in Zim will be about $4.00.

Clients can say all that they want about leaving ammo behind, but it is illegal, yes I know it is done quite often.

Error $400.00 a box not $4.00.

Foxi, please how are you defining game ranger? This is for Zimbabwe.

You should not be shooting the DGX on elephant, that is a job for the DGS.

DGX bullets if you are shooting for lungs and heart on a side shots but for a head or brain shot that is going to end in disaster. They are not designed for skull penetration in my honest opinion.

I'm 100% certain the Madala made a typing error and typed DGX instead of DGS.
A man of his experience is likely to make a error on a keyboard, not in the field...

Thank you for your kind words.

I have a Zastava M70 chambered in .458 Win Mag. It wears a Trijicon Accupoint 1-4x scope with the German # 4 reticle, in Warne rings.
I have worked up a load with Woodleigh's excellent 550 grain Weldcore bullet @ 2,060 fps.
I am just itching to see how a cape Buffalo reacts when receiving one in the boiler room.

Hi Jon,
I saw your post for the .500 NE cases. Are these all brass or are they nickel plated? Hard for me to tell... sorry.
Thanks,
