Looking For 243 For Kid's Hunting Rifle

If your not stuck on bolt actions savage 99s were available in .243 and still turn up fairly regularly on the used market and gun shows.
@Skinnersblade
Hush your mouth and stop using filthy language.
REAL SAVAGE 99s were made in 22 Hi power, 250 Savage, 300 Savage and 358 win. Savage and 243 should never be used in the same sentence you heathen.
Bob

I like the .243 too.
Was out on a Fallow hunting trip last year (same place we went) and saw my mate drop 2 Fallow with one shot using one.
And that was with plain-Jane factory gain 100gn soft-points - not Barnes or anything fancy.
Both dropped on the spot - just as quick as the Fallow l shot with my .338...
With a well placed shot l would feel confident using the .243 on deer, no problem.

@Badboymelvin
Russ my mate @peter Who saw the light after the lat 2 fallow he shot.
Both with Remington 100gn core lockt 100gn factory rounds.
1st one went down to a nice chest shot. The second one same shot placement same distance (70 odd yards) went down and on the way to retrieve them the 2nd one got up and ran off never to be seen again.
After that miserable performance he bought a nice left handed 25-06.
The 243 now sits in the safe awaiting sale to some one..
Not a fan of the 243 and never will be.
It's half way tolerable with 100gn round nose under 200 yards. They seem to work better than any other bullet in it.

Gee Bob 35 W must be on holidays he has not blown a gasket yet with all this 243 talk .
I am going on a hunting trip next week with my Son & grandson, who is 13 years old his father has a Win 70 Featherweight 243 & i a Weatherby Vanguard 243 we will take along for the young man to shoot. A wood stock Howa 1500 243 would be a good rifle for your young boy to get started with.
@rdog
And here I was thinking you were a kind and generous man. To inflict both your son and grandson with 243s is just plain mean. At least give the young fella you 6.5 Grendel to use. Far better than the little 243.
Bob

Not arguing with the claims about suppressors. But I don't have the tax stamp and won't anytime soon.
You just go down to the gun shop that sells them and they get your paperwork and finger prints handled, pick out your suppressor and pay for it and you are done....well other than the 180-240 day wait til you paperwork comes back. 1 time $200 tax stamp per suppressor and each stamp is for that suppressor alone.
Kind of a pain but when the paperwork shows up its like a surprise xmas!

Yep, I’m on month eight of the wait on my latest suppressor purchase.

Sadly 180-240 is pretty optimistic these days…

It looks like it’s taking 300-365 days on average right now for the ATF to process the e form 4 for most folks…

SilencerCentral is reporting that atf is currently approving applications from Sept-Dec of 2022…

WAB: My suppressor post was intended for OP as it didnt sound like he had the gist of the process.

MDWEST: Last 2 were just over 7 months and 8 months...lucky i guess. Ive waited just over a year before but have also got one back in 63 days or so. All over the board.

Here is an interesting option that I stumbled across earlier today. I have no familiarity with the Stevens 334; in fact today is the first I've ever heard of them:

Another option that, depending on the date of manufacture, might also be C&R eligible:

Daughter with first deer all on her own - age 14. With Ruger 77 Compact, in your 243 Win caliber. Doesn't quite make your relic criteria, but 2 out of 3. I like Savage model 99's also, but have to admit that they do not fit small shooters very well without cutting both ends down some. I do like this little Ruger of hers. I have killed Coyotes out to 250 yards with it. It is a great little truck rifle - short and handy. Almost like a handgun for an adult, but still fun to shoot.
