Lightweight Ammo Case For Flying

You don't have to use a TSA lock for your ammo or guns.

Durabox 10 x 8 x 5” Waterproof Hard Case – Portable Shockproof Hard Camera Case with Customizable Foam – Ideal for Cameras, Lenses, Electronics and Gear https://a.co/d/c89zKCH

Best one I have found for weight/cost.. description says just over two pounds but mine is just under without the foam

I need an ammo case for 3 boxes of 375, which model Apache should I buy?

Measure the size of the 3 boxes. The small Apache 1800 for $13 might work. Go to Harbor Freight website and it shows the internal measurements

8-1/8” x 5-5/8” x 3-3/4”

I actually have that one, just tried, no dice. Medium it is!

The one drawback with the Apache case, the small is too small and the medium is overly large. I wish they made one sort of in between.

I use the Pelican 1200 for a PG hunt. It will hold up to 5 boxes if .300. If on a DG hunt I'll have the Pelican 1300 and it will carry anything you'll need up to the 11lb ammo limit.
Please do NOT follow some of these people's advice with the crappy lightweight ammo cases. All we need the the belly of the plane full of loose ammo and then we are all screwed!
Price is no issue as these cases are all readily available lightly used on EBay. Remember your ammo limit is 11lbs according to IATA regs.

I just returned from my second South Africa trip.
This damage was discovered upon arrival in Johannesburg.
No damage to the rifles.
I won't complain about the weight of a Pelican case again.

One of the guys I went with had his ammo box broken in his checked bag on a previous trip. It was a cheap box.

I ship my ammo in a Pelican case.

Thanks for sharing the advice. I ordered the 1200 with foam for a reasonable price on eBay. That will be what I use for my trip next year.

You are set!

I'm leaving June 25 and am taking both my 404J and 375H&H. I'm bringing two boxes of ammunition for each rifle. The four boxes of ammunition weigh about 8 pounds. Reading this thread prompted me to go out to various regulatory websites. My understanding is that when 'case' is referred to, that is the cardboard or plastic case that the ammunition comes in from the manufacturer which I've verified Nosler, Federal and Hornady all have the cartridges separated in the plastic or cardboard case. Nothing I read requires us to the put the ammunition into another, locked storage device. Thus weight including case refers to the manufacturers 'case' (cardboard or plastic).

I am using a Pelican 1300 (for the ammunition along with my knife, multi-tool, and a few other items including TSA Pelican locks) which will put me over 11 pounds just in case Airlink requires the ammunition box to travel outside my other checked bag for the flight from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls.

I'm including links for anyone that wants to have them as reference. I've bookmarked all of these links on my I-Phone so if I have any issues with Delta in Tampa, I can refer them to the regulations and their own website.

SA Airlink states 5 KG in a separate and lockable container.

TSA Transporting Firearms and Ammunition

IATA Dangerous Goods Guidance for Passengers

IATA PDF Table 2.3.A

Delta Flying with Sports Equipment
- You will need to open the section "Shooting Equipment" to get the details.

When I return from my trip I will post my hunt report and include a summary of the travel for reference.

This is helpful, I am past the point of even worrying about my ammo it gets so convoluted, no one knows airline policies better than Africa hunters.

I have a Nanuk 904 case that is reasonably compact and easily holds 2 boxes (40) 375 H&H and 1 box of 470 NE.
Ammo and case weigh in just under 9 lbs.

Just wanted to say thanks for the excellent customer service. Ordered some 9.3x62 brass and the delivery was a little short. An email through your website Contact Us link was replied to the next day with the tracking info for the correction. Good pricing coupled with great customer service will see returning customers every time. Thanks again!

Made it to Augusta Georgia yesterday for a meeting, hunt bookings are looking good for 2026 and 2027, had a great time on our Alabama safari shot a rutting deer at 200 yards with 7mm PRC near Huntsville and then headed on to Butler Alabama and semi guided my first deer ever shot a very nice broken off 8 point with hunter there and spend a few days on 1100 acres hunting preserve awesome place!

I am righthanded, so not interested in the rifle, but I have a 375 RUM and 350 gr bullet loading data is very hard to come by. If you could reply with information regarding your loads I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Ray Boone, Leavenworth, WA
