Really, such fortune just happens. Probably the finest game animal I've every taken and likely will ever take. Last day of my hunt, mid-April 2016. Free range. One second nothing, next second a tracker clicks and points and there he is- poof! Can't claim any hunting skill other than a good heart-lung shot. He ran out of sight maybe 90 yards. We walked up to him and everyone looked at each other not daring to say a thing. Three trackers and 2 PHs never whispered the "Six O" word. Something about the 60 inch kudu curse. Finally after much anguish and study, the bravest PH pulled out a tape.
This one is very similar to the one the original poster included. Very tight spirals, but very long, and they turn out significantly in the final curl. I counted coup on him with a camera at Etosha. I think he may just make sixty. If not, he is a damned fine 58 or so.
i think i have to go with the story about werner lewies hiding the tape measure and telling clients their kudu are bigger than they are. the kudu at the top of the page looks to be a 56" or so. the second one posted is easily 60". the ph's on here can absolutely tell what is or is not 60" and most of us hi ters cannot.
even though ive taken 20-30 bulls i still dont think im qualified to say what is or is not 60. what i can say is that ive shot a heck of a lot of kudu that i would have swore would have gone 60" and only 3 have gone over 58", not one has measured 60" as of yet!
When I hunted Dall sheep, I read that you can't mistake a 40 inch ram. And that's true moat of the time, that head gear is just massive. But kudu are a lot sneakier about it. While I loat no sleep about numbers my PH swore my first bull would be 55"+. It tapes at 52" with no regrets. My second looked larger to me, but was 50". It happens to be a much slimmer head than most and wider spread that threw things off to me.
Kudu carry all their inches in the curl DEPTH....This one carries his curls so deep you can put your hand in a fist and stir you arm down to the base of the ear . Deep deep curls mean INCHES on the tape. I can have a kudu tight twist way longer than a deep deep curl one shorter and it will beat him badly....on the tape
ty howard. that kudu is probably around 56" i would guess. To go 60" they have to have insane curls. they don't have to point out but they do have to have massive deep curls and that guy is shallow.
I just finished Hunting in the limpopo province and this bull was their breeding bull. They have tons of pictures of him and he was their best bull. Sadly the drought in the area was too much and he died just a few months ago. To my complete surprise this bull however DID NOT make the 60" mark.
He was a breeding bull and was in their breeding camp. I was completely shocked when I was told at his best he went 58 1/2". It just goes to show we all have something to learn when judging kudu.
The good news is that he passed on his jeans and i saw several younger bulls in the massive hunting area that had his exact same look. So hopefully in a few more years we will start seeing more bulls just like him.
I've seen this picture in so many places so when I went into the farmers office and saw all the breeding material on this bull I felt like I was hunting in the region of a legend.
On the other side I was hunting just off the fence of the breeding camp a few time. Let me just say that the size of those bulls in that area will blow most any PH's mind. Just thought it was neat to finally KNOW where this bull came from. It seems every ph I talk to says he hunted that bull and almost got him. lol, truth is that a very wealthy farmer who is a kudu fanatic found him on his farm at an "earlier" age and put him in his breeding camp to ensure the jeans were spread.
Hi Gents, I'm new to the forum, still plenty of big kudu in South Africa and the Eastern Cape is catching up with the rest of South Africa and producing some >55" kudu's and the occasional 60". Here is a picture of a possible South African record kudu bull taken earlier this year on a farm in the Limpopo province.
just to clarify, according to the alleged owner of this bull he died in his breeding camp a few months ago due to the drought and i was told he measured 58 1/2". I would give the name of the farmer but since I now have an in with a really good area to take my family for good kudu and an awesome hunt I don't want to give up the name of the farm or area.
