I can't help but think of the Taliban trying to erase Buddhism, when I see monuments of all sorts being toppled.
Yes, different motivations. Not the greatest analogy. But un-thinking, violent responses nonetheless.
We are supposed to learn from history. We cannot do that, if we erase it.
Much of it is grasping at straws and/or trying to make connections that either dont exist, or are irrelevant to the argument....
Wanting to take down the Roosevelt monument because TR represents "American Colonialism"?????
What exactly does that have to do with BLM or even ANTIFA?
What about all of great, historic, things TR did for the US (whether you agree with them or not.. there is no disputing TR changed the world in several ways.. and that many people think many of those ways were positive)...
If we're going to start looking for excuses and only accepting perfect people to memorialize or people that lived in "perfect" times by everyones definition of perfect.. we might as well destroy all monuments and erradicate all holidays...
MLK was far from a perfect man... There are mountains of statements, testimonies, and paperwork that demonstrate MLK having multiple affairs on his wife... There is evidence that was brought forward in an FBI investigation that alleges that MLK witnessed a rape that he never reported or did anything about because he thought it would weaken the movement...
Should we rename all of the MLK streets in the US now? Tear down the statues? Get rid of the holiday?
Or is it more proper to recognize that he accomplished a great deal, did a lot of great things, and was an icon within his community and the leader of the civil rights movement that accomplished far and away the most among all of his peers?
We're all broken.. we all have flaws.. we all make decisions that some others are going to disagree with... let he without sin cast the first stone...
But that damn TR was president during a period of time in American history I dont like!!!!!! Tear down the statue!!!!!!!
That is ridiculousness at its finest...
Christopher Columbus died in 1506... While he certainly wasnt perfect either.. is anyone questioning whether or not what he did changed the world or was foundational to what ultimately led to the forming of our nation?
If youve suddenly decided in 2020 that your offended by a dude that died more than 500 years ago for doing things that were pretty much in line with the global acceptable standards of the time... I suppose we should also get rid of the monument to Kicking Bird at Ft. Sill, all evidence and documentation associated with Ghengis Khan, and burn anything that mentions Shaka Zulu as well... since all of those dudes did some pretty heinous things by the 2020 standard as well (although their actions at their time in history and among their people and their culture, were considered absolutely acceptable and even heralded to the point that people thought they should be memorialized)...
