Juneteenth??

So there is no place for political moderates in these forms? There are a whole bunch of AH credentials after your name. Do your views represent those of Africahunting.com?

AHOM! (All Hunter's Opinions Matter).

SOC101 is what us engineering majors took for an easy "A" elective and to meet girls.

Well, not an engineering major and it was not an elective. In Texas, that course is in the General Education Requirements and I did meet a girl in it. My easy A' were the History of Rock n Roll and Tennis. In fact, six (6) A's in Tennis. If only I could still play like that today.

It would seem that there isn't much of a place for political moderates on these forums - unfortunately. I'm a life long republican, but have recently had a complete reversal of views and would not consider myself left of moderate. For me to voice an opinion here (or an equivalent forum) is a waste of time and emotion. Sadly, in todays political reality positions that differ from ones own ideological views come from the enemy, not from the opposition. Ah, for the good ol' days.

I am embarrassed for a few reasons. First, I did not know the date of the emancipation proclamation. Second, while I do not have many black friends, the ones I do have said that they have never before felt comfortable recognizing Juneteenth. Third, I felt uncomfortable hearing people talk publicly about being freed from slavery and that is because I hold prejudices that I am working hard to recognize and overcome.

I can understand that.. and I think that is commendable..

But I think that is more tied to understanding how the war unfolded and ended as opposed to Juneteenth...

On a national level, what is far more relevant IMO is the EP that passed in Jan 1865, didnt actually free any slaves until it was ratified in the 13th amendment to the constitution in December 1865... which was already a full 8 months after the Civil War ended in April of 1865...

The fact that it took Union troops 2 months to get to TX in June 1865 to spread the word really shouldnt be any surprise.. It was 1865 after all.. Travel took time back in those days.. especially under the circumstances and conditions..

If there is a celebration to be had over the end of slavery.. either the passing of the EP (Jan 1865) or the passing of the 13th amendment (Dec 1865).. or even the end of the Civil War (April 1865)... make FAR more sense nationally.. Those were actions that ended slavery on the national level.. as opposed to June 1865.. which happens to be when Troops showed up in Texas specifically to share the news and enforce the new standard locally (which was not yet included in the constitution)..

If we're going to celebrate Juneteenth.. why dont we also celebrate the date that Union troops began forcing the release of slaves in Florida?

Why not celebrate when the Union took back control of the Confederate Territory of Arizona west of TX?

The war ended in April 1865.. but Arizona troops were still fighting in May of 1865.. because news hadnt made it out west yet... (no different than TX)...

For that, you can thank Obama and the media that was in love with him. Unlike other POTUS, Obama can't keep his mouth shut and is still fanning the flames. He just needs to STFU. Yeah, for the good ol' days.

The trolling started with the accusatory racist post.
Yes, you are probably correct.

I guess I am used to people calling the citing of known fact as racist, but the attempt to drag Jerome and AH into your posts is really very much a leftist tactic and put me over the edge.

I have to disagree. It is all in how you present your ideas. Edit: take a look at how Saul can disagree, yet still have a civil discussion.

To call someone a racist, and try to get the management of the board implicated is not going to sit well with most fair-thinking people.

I will add this: We all do well to remember our manners. All of us...starting with me!

Not exactly.

In spite of the racist things said I’ve resisted pushing the “report” button. Self policing is the best policing.

In spite of my assumptions about some of the posters I have only labeled their posts as racist; not the members.

It’s okay to be racist I guess. If you say racist things sometimes they get pointed out though.

This is not the case. I consider myself fiercely independent. People sometimes get a little "snarky" on here, but I tend to think that we are all gentlemen who, at the end of the day, respect each other a whole lot more for saying what we believe than by towing a party line. I might disagree with some of the most conservative members on these forums (and the forums do tend to lean conservative), but you will not find a finer group of upstanding gentlemen. I would be honored to share a glass of scotch with any one of them. Just get used to a fair amount of "ribbing" and you will be fine.

Where did guys like this go? Now it's rap music with kill the cops lyrics.

I entirely agree. I think one of the reasons why America is at the place we currently are is because we do no emphasize history and civics in schools like we once did. These are the discussions we need to have, from the good to the bad to the ugly of American history.

I can't help but think of the Taliban trying to erase Buddhism, when I see monuments of all sorts being toppled.

Yes, different motivations. Not the greatest analogy. But un-thinking, violent responses nonetheless.

We are supposed to learn from history. We cannot do that, if we erase it.

Much of it is grasping at straws and/or trying to make connections that either dont exist, or are irrelevant to the argument....

Wanting to take down the Roosevelt monument because TR represents "American Colonialism"?????

What exactly does that have to do with BLM or even ANTIFA?

What about all of great, historic, things TR did for the US (whether you agree with them or not.. there is no disputing TR changed the world in several ways.. and that many people think many of those ways were positive)...

If we're going to start looking for excuses and only accepting perfect people to memorialize or people that lived in "perfect" times by everyones definition of perfect.. we might as well destroy all monuments and erradicate all holidays...

MLK was far from a perfect man... There are mountains of statements, testimonies, and paperwork that demonstrate MLK having multiple affairs on his wife... There is evidence that was brought forward in an FBI investigation that alleges that MLK witnessed a rape that he never reported or did anything about because he thought it would weaken the movement...

Should we rename all of the MLK streets in the US now? Tear down the statues? Get rid of the holiday?

Or is it more proper to recognize that he accomplished a great deal, did a lot of great things, and was an icon within his community and the leader of the civil rights movement that accomplished far and away the most among all of his peers?

We're all broken.. we all have flaws.. we all make decisions that some others are going to disagree with... let he without sin cast the first stone...

But that damn TR was president during a period of time in American history I dont like!!!!!! Tear down the statue!!!!!!!

That is ridiculousness at its finest...

Christopher Columbus died in 1506... While he certainly wasnt perfect either.. is anyone questioning whether or not what he did changed the world or was foundational to what ultimately led to the forming of our nation?

If youve suddenly decided in 2020 that your offended by a dude that died more than 500 years ago for doing things that were pretty much in line with the global acceptable standards of the time... I suppose we should also get rid of the monument to Kicking Bird at Ft. Sill, all evidence and documentation associated with Ghengis Khan, and burn anything that mentions Shaka Zulu as well... since all of those dudes did some pretty heinous things by the 2020 standard as well (although their actions at their time in history and among their people and their culture, were considered absolutely acceptable and even heralded to the point that people thought they should be memorialized)...

I think the problem with the TR statue was that it had an Indian and possibly a slave in subservient positions next to him. This does not exactly represent the great man that was TR. I think it would be better if they replaced it with a statue of him either storming up San Juan Hill or hunting.

There is nothing wrong in voicing an unvarnished opinion. Sometimes the truth can be a bitter pill to some people but we have to look at it through clear lenses, not rose colored glasses. History and cold hard facts cannot be changed despite what some people attempt. If an opinion "offends", try researching historical facts before condemning the writer, then state your case based on those facts.
