Is Blaser Trying To Price Themselves Out Of The American Market???

Uh no?

Lon they are used at night because their primary hunting purpose in this country is for feral hogs and coyotes which are often hunted at night. Neither animal typically travels alone, so a suppressor is used to offer a higher likelihood of shooting a second or even third animal. Most are mounted on an AR equipped with some sort of a thermal site. Quite a large bit of the industry here has been created around developing larger or sometimes subsonic rounds that will fit an AR platform and better deal with a large hog.
Red Leg, I was referring to Zimbabwe. We do take multiple hyena without suppressors.

I sm in RSA at the molment. Two days ago someone showed a video of a xxxxxxd that they had just shot on their farm. It ws

i am in RSA at the moment. I was shown a video taken of a xxxxxxd that was shot dragged in a big circle within minutes the first hyena arrived in minutes. Six were shot in a few minutes with out the use of a suppresor.

Back in Zim we have taken eleven hyena in three monts no suppresor used. It seems to vary from predator to predator.

On coyotes which I have hunted it seems strange that they can hear a watch ticking at a distance, but not pay much attention to a suppresed round fired. On the pigs they will keeping smarter.

Once upon a time I heard said that cockroaches and coyotes would be the last living creatures on earth. I do not thnk they knew about ferrel pigs.

It was just one of those things where see something say something made actual sense. I'm glad to know it isn't something you are unaware of.
Interesting enough - that saddle mount turned out to be bad.. First time i have ever had that happen. It was off just enough that the scope would not zero left to right.. Blaser had me send it back to them in Texas and they checked it, then sent me a replacement..

We have a saying about feral hogs here in Texas. Each sow produces a litter of eight twice a year and 24 survive.

I think that’s the ‘new math’ they’re teaching my kids in school. Just imagine your way to the answer…

As long as we are still off topic. The folks that I know that are hog hunting are using an AR platform suppressed with night vision along with subsonic ammo.

Maybe the discussion will w move to subsonic ammo?

And that is over the barrel. Is there a way to attach a Penn Squall?

If it helps her shoot it however, more power to her.

It absolutely does. Anything to help get her into the woods with me is an acceptable trade off.

Every thing is going up in the US market, I spent $22.00 for a sub sandwich chips and a drink yesterday for lunch, doesn't seem that long ago It would be close to half that.
Look at powder, primers etc. It is everything
I didn't know Beverly Hills had a sub shop...

I was very lucky to come into possession of a Blaser R93 Luxus in 7x57 Mauser. Sadly I bought it off the estate of a very dear friend who was my shooting mentor and hunting buddy. I have researched the pricing of new Blaser and parts and they are like Stella Artois reassuringly expensive. I have also visited and bore-scoped a good number of second barrels on the 2hd market and have seen only one with any sign of wear or pitting, which I think speaks to the quality of the manufacture and materials. I will be adding a .243 Win barrel shortly I hope, being subject to police scrutiny as we are in the UK.

Welcome to AH @Eric Nelson. Beauty of a R93 you have there.

Allow me to introduce you to @Bob Nelson 35Whelen with consultation incoming on your next barrel cartridge selection.

Bob, be nice. He just joined today. ;)

For God sake don't get a 243. Horrible little useless cartridge. Get a 25-06 at least, far better cartridge.

Something about suppressors, and multiple game shots. random thoughts.

Very often I have seen roe deer crossing or grazing on our local 200-meters shooting range, while the range was hot.
I have seen roe deer grazing in open fields, not overly reacting after one from group is taken by non suppressed rifle. In this scenario, I think suppresor is more for hunters protection of hearing rather then more effective hunt

But boars, they will react on slightest sound not to say something about shot, supressed or not.
Suppressor will help with noise, especially with sub sonic ammo, but it will have less energy, for sure.

I dont know a case, when repetitive shots could be taken at same group of boars during hunt from blind. There were cases of 2 or 3 boars shot, but with difference in hours from one being shot till next.

I am not sure, is there a difference in behavior of European boar or American feral hog?

Semiautomatic suppressed rifle will be better. There will not be a noise of manual recycling the bolt.
Those are some of my random thoughts.

Similar subject, but different topic:
Having said that, i remembered now a movie I watched recently.
Butchers Crossing with Nicholas Cage.
Cage is buffalo hunter somewhere in Colorado region, and found a herd of 100.000 heads in some canyon.
Wanted to make big money from bison hides.
This is first time that I saw in a movie, a "static type" of shooting at American bison. (Movie "Dances with Wolves", was dynamic hunt scene from horseback)
So, Basically, Nicholas cage gets within range of his rifle, and starts shooting. Bisons graze, and keep falling down. They dont move away. He just stops shooting, when there is too much for skinners to skin. I did not like the movie, not only for so much killing, but also for entire scenario.

I wonder was it like that in reality, then in the wild west?

Happens here too. Night hunters use supressors to take multiple pigs or coyotes in one sitting.

That said, and American buck deer won’t hear a rifle shot and just amble across. He’s gone.

Cheers Bob,

My thoughts where to cover the available game animals; .243 for Muntjac, Chinese Water deer, Roe and Sika hinds and the 7x57 for Red and Sika stags maybe wild boar on to bigger exotics.

However being in the UK there is a big shift to game dealers only taking game shot with non toxic. This is ruining wing shooting in my opinion and it is making full bore rifle cartridges an issue. From recent reading around 9last n ight) only Lapua Naturalis has the required muzzle energy 1729ft/lb at 90gr and the bullet looks like a baguette and is at the bottom end of stability with the twist rate of a .243

I will look at 25-06 as the bolt head will fit the standard bolt on the R93 and it seems a very capable round.

Thanks for the advice

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.
