Good day, all. Joined the group yesterday. To be transparent. Located in the southern USA. To be transparent I may never get the chance to hunt in Africa however, it will always be a dream of mine. The allure of hunting rifles used for big African game has always pulled me in. I just began a project to scratch that itch. I am rebarreling a Savage 110 in 450 Marlin. It will probably not be used a lot because of ammo availability but that’s okay. I can look into 458 American or something similar down the road.

.45 caliber rifles ya, they are addictive.
I don’t know much about the .450 Marlin but, I think it duplicates .45-70 ballistics in a short belted rimless case ( made by cutting off .458 Winchester brass ) ?
And the .458 American I never heard of.
Doesn’t mean that it’s bad in some way, just means I haven’t run across it.

Speaking of .45 caliber rifles, pictured below is my .458 Lott.
It is made from what originally was a CZ .375 H& H, by rebarrelling (23 inch) plus, Model 70 type wing “safety”, Recknagel express sights, barrel band sling swivel, and the stock reinforced against splitting (glass bedded).
It weighs 11 pounds.
Even so, with 500 grainers loaded to full pressure, the recoil is “sporting” to say the least but impressively accurate, so common with .458 bore barrels.
However, with cast lead bullets, loaded to approximately half speed, it is more comfortable to plink and plunk with than a typical 12 bore shotgun with today’s serious waterfowl ammunition.
When your rifle project is complete and you’ve fired it for reliability, accuracy, etc., do post some info and a photo or two of how it all worked out.
