Thanks. The buff was on our first full day in camp. Spotted a bachelor group from the road. They went down into the thick stuff and it was a couple hours of cat and mouse. We were close several times but no shots. Finally our target bull presented a frontal shot. Dead in his feet but I put a second into his shoulder and dropped him. CZ 550 in .375H&H and express sights. 300gr DGX and DGS

Nice. Good to hear another report that Hornady DGX and DGS work. They have stepped up their game, and good that Hornady continues to supply the smaller market African cartridges. Of course, Swift, Woodleigh, CEB, Northfork, etc. are great as well.

Was your buff taken in Zim?
Range with express sights?
Good ole spot and stalk, and stalk hunt.

About 30 yards. Couldn’t see much further than that. I’d like Zim to be my next trip but this was in Limpopo. Also took two impala and a waterbuck on that trip. Farthest range was 88 or so.

I spent many a Tuesday night eating $0.05 oysters and drinking $1.00 beers at The Gin in Oxford back in the late 80’s. Was the best Ole Miss bar in town. I think it’s been gone for more than 25 years now though….

Long time lurker. Account says it was created in 2019. Don’t think I’ve ever interacted before but read almost daily. I live in north Mississippi and have been to Africa once. I spent a fair amount of time in Europe in the military so I’ve gotten to hunt there as well as Florida, Alaska, Idaho, and Wyoming. Vintage bird guns? Are you talking hammer (exposed sidelocks), SxS, 28, 20, 16, 14, or 12 gauge, guns? Even better would be muzzleloading shotguns.

I would enjoy a couple of hunt reports and more info.

Not quite that vintage but from the 50s and 60s. Maybe earlier. Rowland Watson and Webley and Scott along with a Belgian-built A5 all in 12ga. My new favorite is a Savage 311 in 16ga. I’m a bit of a sucker for “utility grade” guns from that era.

The Gin was legendary but before my time. My dad remembers it being an actual cotton gin. Unfortunately, a fire took it. Don’t remember the year.

Bird hunting and utility grade shotguns, yes.
All mine are SxS except one 12 bore Model 12 Winchester slide action.

It is an early model, (1930’s) ? with solid rib, “corn cob” forend, Polychoke, etc.
I had that weird Polychoke (Dial-a-Duck) eye sore gimmick thingy removed and a large white (porcelain) front bead installed.
Now the barrel is 25” and true cylinder.
(My favorite choke is no choke).

My 16 gauge is a vintage ( not sure how to determine the year of manufacture) Russian hammer gun, very plain grade.
It has a tinted birch stock.
However it fits me perfectly, as though made for me and it is a super fun pheasant getter.
“Swings like a 20, hits like a 12” as they say (whoever “they” are).

My best grade shotgun is a late 1950’s - early 1960’s Betetta Model 409 in 20 bore, with 2 sets of barrels.
It was a gift from my wife.
(What she’s doing with me for 31 years and counting remains a mystery).
I have hunted pheasant and quail on fellow AH member —> Gizmo’s “Rockin-G-Ranch”, in Texas with this snappy little gun.
It is my most reached for, “go to” and general purpose shotgun, a real peach.

My 28 gauge is a plain (very plain) Spanish Zabala Hermanos.
Definitely not a fancy looking shotgun but again, it fits me as if made for me.

My .410 is a very early Savage-Stevens Model 311, with walnut stock.
I had formerly owned 311’s in 16 and 12 bore as well but, only the .410 remains now.

Seems a real shame that high velocity, #4 lead birdshot ammunition is not widely available in 28 gauge and 16 gauge.
#4’s are my preference for wild pheseant, as they always seem noticeably more “impact resistant” than pen raised ones.

Speaking of real ***shames, you mentioned a vintage Browning Auto-5.
That is the only auto loading shotgun that I am drawn toward.
They fit me like a glove.
Many years ago, I had owned those, all in 12 bore, with various barrel configurations.
It is a ***crying shame that design was never made in a petit frame for the .410 and 28 gauge chamberings.

I love a 16ga. A full choke with 7.5 is my favorite combo for squirrels and rabbits.

I’ve been considering taking the .410 single shot out more. I’m sure a SxS in that gauge is a lot of fun.
