If you were to trim down your dangerous game rifle collection, which cartridge/rifle would you let go and why?

Interesting question. Either my .375 H&H or .458 Lott. I find that having a 9.3x62 Highland Stalker I rarely pick up the .375 anymore. On the other hand, surgeries in both wrists (consequence of being a fairly aggressive hockey player) have made the .458 Lott a bit painful to shoot. I’m giving it a bit more time, but the Lott may end up being a casualty. Then again, it’s got a lot of stories to tell so I may just load it down and plink with it.

Interesting. So if you got rid of the Lott, would the 375 be your biggest offering or would you hold onto a lighter recoiling 458 or 416?

.375 would be it. I’m actually missing a bone in one of my wrists and both have pins and screws, so the bigger guns are becoming more challenging. In my defense, I must say that that last bastard deserved the beating I gave him.

One of my two .416 Rigby, probably the CZ

But WAB, what if you someday want to hunt in an African country where .375 bore is the minimum legal caliber for dangerous game ?

.375 Holland & Holland Magnum is also the world’s only large bore caliber for which some brand or another has always been manufacturing ammunition ever since it’s inception in 1912. Nowadays, large bore ammunition and reloading components are very difficult to find on the current market. But for the .375 Holland & Holland Magnum, a man will never have a shortage of ammunition or reloading components.

Well, if I gave up the .375 I’d still have the .458 Lott, and if I gave up the Lott I’d still have the .375. Don’t worry, I will never be unarmed!

Already did it. LOL 458 win mag with very nice dark wood. Was super accurate but traded up to a custom stainless synthetic 416 that I don't feel bad about using in both Africa and Alaska. I have even taken it out through the dreadfully thick upland wooded swamps in bad weather for black bear near home and it would be perfect for moose as well in the Northeast.

I am still in the acquisition phase of doubles so I would not be willing to part with any of the ones I have so far. I would have to sacrifice my Barrett, or one of my AR’s I suppose. And it’s a very interesting question.

Starting over id go back to what I started with: model 70s in 06 and 375. Then I’d add a 458 and that’s all folks.

I love my 338 and my 270 and 9.3 are great shooting rifles…but a three-rifle rule would mean they all go bye bye.

I only have two DGRs; a 375 H&H and a 458 Win Mag. I absolutely adore my 375, and the 458 is a good but very basic rifle; so the 458 would be the one to go. All very theoretical of course... ;-)

I would keep my 375H&H. Of the handful of DG caliber rifles I have it's the only one suitable for hunting in all weather and all conditions. CZ550, B&C stock, AHR upgrades.

Nice, I'm leaning towards an "all weather" large bore for my next purchase, likely in 416 as well.

I would take my R8 375 along with a 06 or similar 7mm/30cal barrel for plains and call it done. Everything else is just for fun.

Plus there’s a pretty good rush of adrenaline when you flick them gloves off

I have been thinking about this very thing lately. I do not ever plan on taking more than (2) rifles with me on safari, and I prefer to rack up memories on the same two instead of switching it up each trip. Aside from maybe on a dedicated ele hunt, the 375 H&H is making every trip. I have (2) 375’s, (1) 416 RIGBY, (2) Lotts, & a Heym 450 3-1/4” NE. The 416 is already up for sale. I have been playing with the possibility of just shrinking down to (2) in order to use the money from selling the guns to hunt more game. More than likely I will end up keeping (3): Caprivi 375 H&H, AHR Custom CZ 458 Lott, & Heym 450 NE. I’m a fairly new double owner, and I need to shoot mine much more to find out if I’m going to love it as much as I have envisioned.
