If you could choose: Brno Z, ZG 47, ZKK or Cz 550??

I also vote for the 21/21 early models, with their unique convex cheekpieces, elegant profiles. I do wonder why no one has mentioned the 527's....they are not toys after all, and their narrower dovetails are enough akin to other vintage European dovetails that their set of rings can solve many a problem.

I sincerely like both my 527s! One in .223 Remington and a carbine in 7.62.

I own an assortment of BRNO rifles, starting with the ZKK 602 in .375 H&H I bought new in 1970 in Germany. This is my newest acquisition, a 21F, which has been altered to suit my tastes, with a new bolt handle, a new Model 70 type safety, a new trigger guard/magazine arrangement and a new trigger. It has also been rebored from 7X64 to 8X64 Brenneke. I have not yet had the opportunity to try it out on deer. View attachment 454638View attachment 454643
Lovely rifle. I have to admit, I would have left it as 7x64. Why did you not? Tired of 7s? Wanted an 8? Bore was bad? Just curious.

Excellent cartridge choice. I originally tried to get a ZG 47 in 8x64S but the guy who brings in good used rifles from Sweden only had rifles in .30-06 remaining on his table.
All one needs is a barrel, reamer and a go-gage... ;)

A number of Scandinavian and European countries have license proficiency tests on running targets. Drop at heel for iron sight shots may be the reason for stocking the way they do? They are flat better than Americans at the running rifle shots, tho I hate to have to admit it....
That is correct. Open sights were the reason and I, for one, never found it hard to use a scope on such rifles even with imperfect cheek weld. My Kimber Hunter has much straighter stock and the scope fit is perfect but I want to put sights on that rifle and they might have to be too tall, which I hate.

I like those too, but not being made in many "practical for hunting big game" calibers. By big game I mean the non-african big game up to moose size. So more of a varmint toy or small deer/antelope rifles. But for sure light and handy. I like the old .22 Hornet ones. And I like the older magazine release. The new one seems to be trouble some with the metal spring holding the latch coming loose. The dovetail is 16mm which seems to be identical to old Brno .22s but those seemed to have radiused top rather than flat one. Yet I think the rings should fit.

I recently bid on just such a rifle but got outbid. Am a fan of the 8x64s round, been shooting my Mark X Mauser conversion for a while now and much prefer it to its original 8x57 chambering.
Just like the 7x64 which I also have, its a very accurate round.

I have two ZKK. Such well built actions. Solid and svelte all at the same time. I would love to find a 6.5x55 to make a perfect trio. I have not seen one up for sale sadly.

Hello there

i was offered some rifles of the above in calibers like 7x57 and 7x64, also 9.3x62.
Here in Europe the 7x64 is the most common. I already have a Steyr 1912 Mauser in 9.3x62

So which one of the Czech Guns would you choose if all were in great and the same shape also Price ?

Thanks guys
I have a CZ 550 Rigby in 416. I took a 42 inch Cape Buffalo in Zimbabwe. I like the availability of having an extra round. It is solid and well built. IMHO.

The Brno branded rifle with 16mm dovetail that is most likely to have an issue with ring mounts is the ZKM 611 self loading rifle chambered for .22 WMR. The PPK made rifles chambered for .22 WMR and .17 HMR will obviously have the same issue. These rifles have a round top receiver and mounts intended for the CZ 527, Brno ZKW 465, Model 1, 3 and 4; typically do not have sufficient clearance.

Warne makes a special 16mm ring mount set for the ZKM 611 which I actually have. That set (with integral centred recoil lug) will work on any 16mm receiver groove Brno rimfire, Tikka and obviously Lynx rifle but I ended up using a second cut file to increase the clearance of a Hillver Tikka Medium Ring Mount in order to get the most practical scope height for me. I used my Proxxon tool to cut off part of the Hillver arresting pin head so that it would fit the locating groove in the 611 receiver. Sportsmatch rings for the CZ 527 will work on Brno Model 1, 3, 4 and early Model 2 receivers because the height from bottom of groove to top of the receiver is less than on the CZ527.

In my opinion the barrel on a Model 22F is too short for a cartridge like the 7X64, meaning the noise level would be objectionable and part of the powder charge would remain unburnt. Going to a slightly larger diameter, heavier bullet should alleviate both of those problems. Plus, I already have several 7X64's including one made by Brenneke, Berlin, in 1945.

The Brno 22 barrel is definitely a bit short for the 7x64 unless you go for a heavy bullet; which tends to be the logical choice for a short rifle that was clearly intended for stalking.

BRNO ZKK-602 in 7x57m Mauser & 9.3x62mm Mauser.

Sorry about that. Typo. ZKK-600 is the one for the standard length cartridges. ZKK-602 is the one for the Magnum length cartridges (came in .375 H&H Magnum and .458 Winchester Magnum)

I like that. Will look for those. Was considering Warne anyway.

True but for my kind of hunting few granules of unburnt powder or few fps don't matter. Besides I would use heavy bullets just to see how it would do compared to 7x57.

exactly what I was thinking.

Agree. I love my CZ 550 in 500 Jeffery. Solid as a bank vault, smooth too, no wiggle in the bolt. With AHR's CZ #1 Upgrade (3 Pos M70 type safety, single stage match trigger and bolt straightened and filled) it's my favorite rifle. Congrats on a great buff btw!

I am pretty happy with my new CZ 550 magnum. It is well built, finished and pretty accurate.

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]

Out of all the different color variations of Impala the black Impala just stands out with its beautiful pitch black hide.

Impala is one of the animals you will see all over Africa.
You can see them in herds of a 100 plus together.

This excellent ram was taken with one of our previous client this past season.
