If you could choose: Brno Z, ZG 47, ZKK or Cz 550??

Cool. The front sights such as you have I too find a bot tall on even other rifles in other calibers. Have one on a .375 Whitworth and it shoots way low. Will be lowering the front rather than making the rear taller. 6 o'clock aim on that atrget of yours for center at 100 m sounds about perfect to me. Just out of curiosity...Does the barrel have the factory stamp 7x57 on top near the receiver?

Yes it does have the 7X57 stamp. At this point I'm convinced it's a 21h with the barrel shortened, the front sight replaced, the bolt modified lower and the receiver tapped and drilled for mounts. Altogether though I think this is going to be a fine rifle with a scope mounted with proper CZ mounts.

That is what I said, 1950 21h with shortened barrel, replaced sights (both) and modified handle, drilled and tapped. Drilling and tapping was really not necessary but the other modes do not necessarily take away from it. Longer barrel on the 7x57 seems to be preferred by many to get full velocity advantage of hotter loaded rounds, but I actually like shorter barrels for their handiness. What you have is a very fine rifle in a great cartridge and sweet to use. Enjoy!! With the right Warne or Talley mounts you should be able to put any scope on it, especially with the modified handle. But being a slim and light rifle, I like the 1" tube 2-7x33 Leupold or equivalent. You might be able to get away with even bigger objective so maybe 2.5-8 or 3-9. Mine actually sports the 3-9x33 Ultralight with a modified reticle (I have German #1 post on it to match the rifle age period, but SABR reticle would be maybe more practical for different ranges).

Bought this at an auction....

Congratulations, by the pics it looks to be in great shape!

I will refinish the stock at least, recutting the checkering, blueing seems to be ok.

Recoil pad is not original, and I think it can be replaced by an old englisch without the white spacer, or something like this.

What I think makes it real rare is, it never had a mount!

I would not even refinish the stock. But since it has already been modified via the pad...This thing is near mint. The metal is mint. Very pristine. Hey I will trade you for even more mint 8x57 21H with double square bridge. ;)

Sorry,... I never sell or trade a rifle....I buy it to keep it. ;)

most are good, but the 47 is the best named...However I belive the Brno mod. 21 rifle and the mod 22 manlicher are by far not only the best Brno ever built but the best commercial rifle ever produced and I prefer them to custom rifles for hunting at least, and until you get into the big bores..

I m apt to trade any rifle or horse, I love to trade, I have some friends that we have traded the same gun back and fourth more than a few times.

I thought my friends and I were the only ones who did that!

Nothing wrong with the good old ZKK series from short to magnum action.....

Amen to that. My thoughts exactly. Best production rifles ever and for me better than expensive customs (at least when bang for your buck is considered so to speak).

I've owned and own some CZs and was looking for the last 12 months or so for a ZG47 in Germany and/or Austria. The dream was to custom build a 9,3x64 Brenneke for a planned Africa trip and to have a sexy classic spare rifle for guests/visiting friends in a moderate (maybe a 7 x57 or x64) cartridge.

According to my observations, the price tag for unspoiled, good condition ZG47s goes in those 2 countries north of 1500 US$.

And I've started to question myself: Is the ZG47 really that slick and sooooo high-end-made that it justifies a >1500 US$ price ??? Especially when I can get in these markets a FN civil system AND an Oberndorfer system for less than 1500US$ combined!
Is the ZG47 really that superior to a DWM Argentino, FN System or a between-wars (say a 1937 or 1941 Portugal) Oberndorfer ?

It starts to dawn on me that the ZG47 is nowadays far too hyped... As is the Z 21 Brno. I mean it still has that cheap CZ East block image and "flavor", doesn't it ?

And if I consider costs for a custom-built rifle, based on an ZG47, action with some of the well-known German gunsmiths / the usual suspects (wish list: new barrel, new iron sights, new trigger, a lovely stock, maybe a different safety etc., ) I am approaching price levels of new Mauser branded rifles from Isny, Allgaeu, Germany. And then surely I would argue that a Brno ZG is a better action than a new-built Mauser!

Well, I had my conclusions and buried for now the wish for a ZG. Bought one FN action and an Oberndorf instead.

and those older brno sporters, including the 600 series, all need restocking anyway due to poor design.
and that will cost on top of purchase price.
bruce.

And I am going for a uniform safety operating direction with all my rifles, Win 70 style, not the cocking / backward type of a ZG47 or ZKK60..

Hi Arthur,

Good question...and answer by the way!
I agree. I also think any and all of the M98 bu you named are as good or better than the ZG47. Having said this, the ZG has some very good features. To have to chose between them at the same price would be a difficult decision.

Best!

get your point ! but in sweden and the north you can buy zg 47 for 300 bucks or less, just keep searching. www.blocket.se is a very good site with many brno mausers

Hi Artur

You have done your homework! I would argue that the biggest advantage that the ZG 47 has over the other Mauser actions mentioned by you is that they come with the bridges of the action already machined at the factory to accept mounts. This provides a very tidy solution to scope mounting.

Other than that, I am not convinced that the quality of the action is any better than the Obendorf, DWM, FN commercial, or even VZ 24 Brno actions made before and after WW2.

Regards

Jon

ZG47 or a nice ZKK with complete peep backsight. Too many clowns have lost the actual peep.
I agree.

Any ZKK with the 'pop-up' peep sight intact would be my first choice. Wish my 602 had one, but mine's a later model made after BRNO phased out that feature.

I am thrilled with my CZ 550 in 500 Jeffery. I had Wayne at AHR do his CZ#1 Upgrade, not because the rifle needed it, but because I wanted it. That included an M70 style, 3 position safety, single stage match trigger and straighten and fill the bolt. It's extremely accurate (sub MOA), feeds and functions smoothly every time, and the action is as solid as a bank vault. Much more so than an Winchester M70 (which I own). Heresy! . I'm sure the new Mauser magnum actions are every bit as good if not better, but at a much higher price point.
