If this is lion hunting…. You can have it

All around poor display

Chasing buffalo with helicopters.
Wounding CBL lions with arrows is almost common it seems.

videos like this cant be good for Hunting or SA

I understand the lion being upset. If my best friend kicked me out of my house and a week later was trying to kill me I’d be mad too :ROFLMAO: :A Outta:
Bet he had a name .............

This is another fantastic example of someone I don’t want representing African hunting or, myself, as an African hunter.

This CBL nonsense can’t be over soon enough!

Good one!…. And mostly likely true.

Now did anyone notice in the intro the hunter said “I requested 2 PHs’ because this is a dangerous hunt”

Then the younger PH has to fire when the older PH stops the lion with his second shot but doesn’t kill it…lion is trying to get to his feet while the senior PH is trying to reload.

I wish they would have captured the hunters face at that time!

As i have stated before,

hunting lions with a bow is a stunt. if things go well, then a guy could survive one, maybe two. but you can't push an apex predator along, keep harassing him and then hit him with an arrow (even one properly placed and this one was not) and not expect a charge! what comes next? a PH shoots the lion OR lots of screaming and bleeding.

whether it was a canned lion or not, i suspect the outcome would be the same just about every time. regarding lion hunting period, i suspect it will largely be deemed bad by anybody EXCEPT the hunting community. AND, we collectively are pretty harsh critics as well.

the PH held his second shot till the last second and made it count, so well done there.

After watching the first 30 seconds of video only a "blind" fool should think it will be a good representation for hunting. Its following the YT way to get likes and ultimately $$$$. Sort of like advertising of the 70,80s, scantily clad ladies selling product. Happening in woke 2023.

It is the PH responsibility to keep all safe while on safari, he did his job. No different than a bow hunting grizz hunter in NA. Not sure why all are complaining.

As for the whole CB Lion issue, I have no real comment other than to say I did get mine in 2021. It allowed me to hunt/shoot a lion, something I would not be able to do without CBL. I sure hope that all who complain about CB Lion hunting never hunt any enclosure in NA, or feeder fed species, high rack hunts, or pay as you go camps. Or any of the US/Cnd hunts where they name their target animal. My thinking, if its a legal hunt its OK. Not my place to force my morals, feelings or thoughts on anyone else.

Point about antis are moot in my eyes. They will never relent and never stop forcing their beliefs, even if nobody posts any vids, they will still find a fight, even if hunting ended worldwide. I agree adding fuel to fire with bad exposure is not good and could change a few undecided minds.

And what in the hell was that overly complicated looking contraption that they used to wound their lion with anyway ?
It appears to be a Ravin Crossbow and actually top of the line and newest technology. They are very accurate out to 70+ yds for archery type equipment.

I've seen shots up to 150 yards with a Raven now. The brand has made me very anti crossbow.

Just to reiterate the fact that it can happen with a wild lion and a rifle as well. Still don’t think bows are appropriate for DG and definitely do not believe affordability is a justification for a lot of stuff that goes on, including CBL. Justifications like that are just excuses and coping mechanisms

I would highly suspect that is a CBL shoot as well. Too good of a mane. Nearly all wild lion hunts will be from a blind over bait to properly age the animal, the follow up shot would be offhand.

The video looks like a normal CBL shoot to me. I’m shocked how many continue to participate in this practice and defend it here. I wonder how many would participate if they got to select and dart their lion the week before? I won’t argue it’s dangerous but it’s not hunting, it’s a unique harvesting method for a farmed animal.

I can definitely see that. They operate in multiple countries including RSA

The shame of an old white man.
Boasting about shooting a half tame lion with a crossbow with two armed Phs on his side. Almighty and proclaiming it as a heroic deed in the social media.
Before that, it is discussed at length and loudly that it really is 43 metres away.
But you see, even discarded circus lions are still damn fast.
It's a pity he couldn't grab the crossbowman by his balls.
I would have begrudged him - the lion.

I agree with everything you posted here.. Especially in regard to the hypocrisy of many hunters throwing stones from their glass shooting houses.. I also agree that a lot of needless hand-wringing goes on about the perception of hunting in the eyes of the anti-hunters. Reasoning an fact is wasted on their behalf..

I see two separate controversies from the video:

One is in regard to the ethics of CBL hunting which I think you already addressed reasonably well..

The other is in regard to the ethics of dangerous game hunting with archery equipment which I will address personally below under Wishfulthinker's post..

You would think the hunting world would learn to stray from crossbows used on lions since Dr Palmer's mess back in 15

Why would hunters stray form crossbows or any other archery equipment of that matter? The controversy over the lion hunt with Dr. Palmer (which was a wild lion over bait by the way) had nothing to do with the fact he was hunting with a crossbow other than the ignorant, libelous, media attempted to make it seem somehow more inhumane.. If your comment is an implication that archery equipment is less ethical than rifle hunting I vehemently disagree, and I am happy to have that debate with you..

That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

Not sure what this is about? But, if it's another implication about archery equipment, please say what you mean and we can have that discussion..

Just to reiterate the fact that it can happen with a wild lion and a rifle as well. Still don’t think bows are appropriate for DG

Why? I assume you don't bowhunt or know many who do and have hunted dangerous game with archery equipment to any extent? I have, and I disagree... Archery equipment, just like a rifle, is only as good as the hunter who holds it. Hunting DG with a bow or crossbow is arguably more dangerous and risky, but certainly not less ethical.. It's ultimately the hunter's responsibility to know their equipment, use it proficiently, and also know their limitations regardless of the weapon used..

We can have the discussion that a perfectly placed first rifle shot is more immediately lethal that a perfectly placed arrow shaft or bolt, but less than perfect shot placement, regardless of the weapon, can provoke a charge just as easily.

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS FOR MY RIFLE, ALWAYS APPROACH A NEW LOAD CAUTIOUSLY!!*
Rifle is a Pierce long action, 32" 1:8.5 twist Swan{Au} barrel
{You will want a 1:8.5 to run the heavies but can get away with a 1:9}
Peterson .280AI brass, CCI 200 primers, 56.5gr of 4831SC, 184gr Berger Hybrid.

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
