Depends what dg if it is forest buff and some cats and forest plainsngame a Bergstutzen 9.3x74R/7×57R would be perfect......from duiker to forest buff......22" barrels....Krieghoff or Blaser....the 9.3x74R is a very underrated caliber.....

If you prefer having a telescopic sight on hand, then I highly recommend quick release detachable scope mounts.

For jungle use, most shots are taken at close range because of low visibility situations in the dense foliage. Game present themselves in such scenarios that you need a rifle setup which you can simply snap up to your shoulder, instinctively line up your sights and pull the trigger.
Makes sense. I put talley quick release mounts on all my rifles. I've never done a Bongo, or forest buffalo hunt - not sure how similar my Mozambique experience would be to one of those hunts.

anything on the cheaper end?

Rifle wise?
If you can afford a forest jungle hunt you can afford above....
Other option would be a O/U double 9.3x74R one barrel quality expander the other a quality solid brass bullet....I would fit a ghost ring rear sight....

That's a good point - those jungle hunts are expensive

I have a .416 Ruger custom from AHR in Wayne’s synthetic stock. Think that is what I personally would take in the scenario presented.

I have lived in Gabon for 39 years (tropical forest or jungle as you say).
I've been hunting there since I lived there.
In my humble opinion, the best weapon for this type of biotope is the Winchester Super Express in 458 MAG, believe me. She is short (therefore easy to handle in the forest), does not need a scope given the short shooting distances, the ammunition is easily found if needed and it is not expensive (the weapon).
I also have an HK 940 in 7.64, a 375HH as well as an Express in 500 nitro.

Sorry,my english is from Google translate

I have taken my old 416 Rigby on a half dozen deep jungle trips in C.A.R and Cameroon over the decades. I would see no reason to change. Shooting is usually short range and more importantly you often do not know what may surprise you in the heavy cover. For example, was ambushed by a Forest elephant while sitatunga hunting. After the dust settled we discovered AK 47 bullets in the rightfully cranky old Tembo’s carcass. Poachers notoriously do not deal with wounded animals

When you reference jungle, I assume rainforest. If so a 375 H&H Magnum with a 20" or so barrel, stainless steel and composite stock would be better. That should take care of anything you encounter. If going after forest elephant maybe a 458 Win or Lott instead. You would also want a shotgun for the small duiker.

Mike,

Superb weapon that has also lived well.

When I go to Situtunga, it's a special biotope where I don't risk having bad encounters, I take my HK940 in 7.64. Not bad either.
Here she is in good company :)

A double rifle in 9,3x74R, .375 Flanged or 450/400 with a detachable scope would be my choice..

Two quick shots in dense forest..
