I have read about the rename of the 244 and that 6mm mag was kicked around.
One old gunsmith here had a pice of brass that had 6mm rem mag on it.
Said he got it from a outfitter that took some gun company people on a deer hunt along time ago . He told me that in about 93
He also had a box of empty 7 mm express in the old green and white box rem supposed be from the same place

I believe the .280 Remington was renamed the 7mm Express for awhile to increase sales but it didn’t work. Remington went back to the .280 designation.

The 338 and Hillary have a lot in common so good suggestion.
Both are over rated, make a lot of noise and don't accomplish anything that something else can't be done better by something else with less fuss. Hillary Clinton was a none starter and pretty hopeless. At least the 338 got a start but is still 2nd best compared to the Whelen. Bob, do you know anyone more deadly than Hillary. Some armys haven’t killed as many as she.

Good suggestion @Flbt. The 6mm/244 Remington is a much safer chambering because the combustion gases leave the cartridge case in line with the barrel. You do not prematurely roughen up the leade and cause pressure problems. I ran a club range complex for 14 years and you need to learn information like that when you are dealing with enthusiastic novices talking up their load development plans!

However, if you are seriously suggesting a 6mm as a general purpose hunting cartridge … may you be drowned in ‘weasel piss’ Budweiser and spend eternity in hell, hunting dangerous game with a plastic BB gun !

It depends on where you are at for it being general purpose.
Florida our big thing is a gator and if you use a gun it’s a head shot.
Next is hogs most use a knife on them
And a really big deer is most likely be under 200!lbs

Most deer are closer to 100 lbs what does a wild turkey weigh?

If you are shooting hogs it could be a problem but head , neck, or hart shot has never been a problem even all the way down to a 22mag if you hit.

Now to be completely honest I was never a small rifle guy. The first bad shoulder problem I had .
Made it so I could not use one of my normal deer rifles 338,356,350rm or 45-70
So the days my wife was not using her 6 I did
I killed a few deer and a few hogs they dropped just as quickly as they did with the bigger stuff.
Well she amd my doughter bought me a mark2 in 6 so I started using it
The big stuff still there if needed lol

Remington had a great time stuffing around with cartridge names to convince people to to buy them but created that much confusion the went back to the original name.
Dang some idiots even tried to fire the 7mm express in the 7mm mag .
Unfortunately they failed and some good cartridges failed when they should have succeeded like the 280 REM . Would have helped if they loaded them properly as well.

The 242 Vickers is actually the land size it was actually a 248 bore size. How do I know this, my gunsmith built one but made it a 243 neck size because .248 projectiles are unavailable.

I may just happen to have around 100 original rounds and brass, as I was trying to buy one from a deceased estate, the guys at atomic 29 said they could make the projectiles for me.
Unfortunately for me the rifle went to holts in the uk and was sold for a silly amount of money

I feel as if I may have joined a cult. 35 whelen is the cartridge that will not only basically make you a better marksmen but improve looks, intelligence, sexual stamina.
I missed out on the first round of Lipsey’s Ruger African and regretted it and swore if they reissued I would have one, well any under 2000.00. Browsing GB several new ones have pooped up.
I browsed all of them and hot damn one ending on 6 hours and in Duncan, OK. I live in OKC so threw a bid and figured no way I would get it since after the initial allocation they were bringing big money. You know where this is going, I won…wooo hoooo $1500 rough all in.
I am retired so figured I would drive down and pick up so no damage in shipping. Lay eyes on the mythical beast that alluded me the first time. Huge let down, plain as she could be. Kinda like getting a blind date with one of five sisters in my home town. All were drop dead gorgeous, except the one. You guessed it that one came home with me.
1.5 hour drive home with plain Jane in back seat, also had to have the Bog death grip bipod. Now roughly 1850 on the most gawd awful 2x6 piece of furniture and sticky bolt imaginable. One of the other members here mentioned length of pull is a little off so finger on trigger also off.
Return trip home almost made it past the Casinos on I-44,almost, $3850 and still not home yet. During drive decided this piece of engineering excellence is a costly SOB and going to be a retro rifle for me.
Cheap, came with one inch rings so my extra Swarovski 5i’s or Leupold’s with illumination will not fit. Leupold VariX 3 3.5 10x40 from back of gun safe it is. LOP will be addressed with a cheap Tourbon leather lace up stock cover. 4 boxes of 2 different ammo from Optic Planet. $4000 and counting with free scope and rings.
