How many here have successfully hunted the Big 5?

My goal is to complete the dangerous 7 by 50, leaving rhino as the last hunt and celebrating my 50th with my wife and kids there. Rhino seems to be the most family friendly. Currently 3 of 7, but there are some mountain hunts that may make me sidetrack
It’s good to have goals. I’ll be 40 next year and have not yet been to Africa. My goal is to dive in head first and hunt as many DG and PG as possible before 50.

I’ve been prioritizing the mountain hunts so far while I’m young.

You’re a wise man. I hunted Alaska, BC and Yukon in my 20’s, did 6 sheep hunts while I was young and could climb well. You’re doing the tough hunts while you’re young. Smart.

Bit of a pattern here on the missing one being Spots. Doesn't surprise me. I'm thinking of starting a support group for our sad lot. Think about it...billions of people that haven't taken a leopard.
So true!!! Given how many people told me this is the hardest I have saved him for the last. By the way I will be taking plenty of an amber colored liquid to commiserate at night on my hunt. lol!!!

When did you last check? A full horned rhino is definitely in more demand, especially it seems when 22" or more.

For a few years there was an option of leaving the real horn behind for a significant discount. They would keep ownership with the farmer who owned the rhino and he was basically speculating that the horn trade would open and he'd be able to sell it. Last I've heard most are no longer even wanting it.

I would encourage hunting a very mature old bull that had been dehorned. Especially if it has grown back significantly. You can't replicate the big base those bulls have but you can replicate the pointy end;)

Edit; you can replicate the entire horn.. but you cannot honestly put a horn with a much larger base onto a skull that is young or had a much smaller base.

I didn't get a picture, but there was a display of rhino shoulder mounts in the hallway at sci. One had a particularly large base on his horn. It was very noticeable how much difference there is;)
about two years ago was my time of checking. When I won the dart hunt I stopped checking

Scott, you have clearly done well on your choices to get the Big 5, Spiral slam, Marco Polo, etc, etc. Big respect to your experience.
Thanks and same to you. I’m leaving this weekend for the LDE. Hopefully I will be filing a successful hunting report!

I have 4 of the big 5 with leopard as the last to get. I expect to hunt leopard in 2026. Good deal on Bongo came up for this year that sidetracked my Big 5 goal. God willing and the creek don't rise, I will complete the dangerous 7 as well.

I had a great white rhino hunt, shopped around and got very good deal on nice 24"+ trophy on very large ranch. It was not the hardest hunt I have ever done but it definitely was a bit of a challenge. Used my double and crept in very close, certainly got the adrenaline rush I was hoping for.

Will retire in a few years and then the focus will be elephant and buffalo. Elephant is my favorite hunt.

Oooof...that's a dream I need to get more serious about. I need to finish my leopard...and T10...and get into the other spiral horns...but these DG keep pulling me back in.

Just do it :ROFLMAO:  . We have to be the enabler in this case. Just like when someones is doubting when buying a new gun. You can never have enough guns they say.

No just kidding. I know the costs and it is understandable to not do it.
Haha well my daughter is getting married this summer as well so there’s that. She wanted a smaller wedding but her fiancé decided he wanted a bigger wedding with seven groomsmen! Now she had to match that with seven bridesmaids. Now everyone under the sun is invited!

So close—only four more! What could possibly go wrong? Especially with anti-hunting on the rise—should be a breeze!

Aside from lower price point, why would one hunt a dehorned Rhino?

Is that due to export restrictions?
Availability. Many farmers will dehorn their rhinos to deter poaching. Many are also hoping for a legal rhino horn trade.

Big hello! Finally joined the AH community. I’ve google searched and scanned posts over the years but never jumped in .

I have completed big 5 and dangerous 7 as well as helped several of my kids and beautiful wife start their DG collection. No better way to connect and reconnect with family than a nice long dangerous game safari . Most everything dangerous shot in Zimbabwe. We have been there 5 times The first was a little hairy was in 2006 with rampant inflation and farms still being taken . We went for my sons high school graduation . He shot a leopard and buffalo. I shot the elephant I chose for my heading beautiful bull 70 plus pounds a side 76 and 78 inches and very symmetrical.

My wife and I are heading back close to where are first Zim Safari was in May.
Sengwe block we are both hunting the biggest elephant we can find and she is taking her second try for leopard. She had a great opportunity in Tanzania last year it just didn’t quite work out !

Glad to be a part of your group!

Elephant,Lion, Buffalo William Douglas 470
Hippo Croc H&H 375
Rhino dart gun at 7 yards !
No back up gun

Unfortunately I no longer have the William Douglas . I gave it to my PH for saving my life or at least being severely maimed.

The pic of the two buff was only due to the fact that the original buff I shot at 30 yards dropped to the shot . As we were circling in to make sure he was dead his buddy decided to charge at 30 yards didn’t see him until he was coming. By the time my brain registered shoot he was closing in I took a shot and missed ! As I shit I heard Zane my PH shoot . He hit this uninjured bull in full charge between the eyes . The bull hit the ground and was dead 2 yards in front of me ! Anything but a brain shot and I’m probably not typing this .

There’s a tiny drop of blood in the perfect spot—right between the eyes of one buffalo in the picture. Your PH really nailed it!

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]
