Hi from Central Europe

Hallo Jager_Ivo,
........
If you already have a 7MM or, a .30 or, an 8MM, you are ready to hunt most animals in Africa.
Just use a heavy bullet for your caliber, shoot it accurately and you will enjoy great success.

Best Regards,
Velo Dog.
Thank you. I have a .308win hunting rifle and use Sako Gamehead Pro 10.7g/165gr with Sierra Game King bullets for everything.
I also have a .300 win mag but that is probably too heavy tactical/long range
rifle.

Hi, I am a "young" hunter from the Central Europe and I have dreamed of hunting in Africa for many years. I have been following the forum for a long time and maybe in 3 years I will plan my first hunt in Africa. Until then, I will collect ideas, inspirations and...courage here. To begin with the destination and caliber, later personal experiences and recommendations with outfitters and PH's. You know it - every newbie's problems without the right friends

Welcome to AH! You’ve come to a great place to plan an African hunt and don’t worry about being a newbie, we all were at one time.

Welcome aboard!

No worries man.
Your .308 is perfectly suitable for many species in Africa.
However, as much as I like Sierra Game King bullets (and I do like them for things like N. American deer, African Impala and similar game).
Nonetheless, I think there are better projectiles available for some of the tougher animals in Africa, such as blou wildebeest, waterbuck, Zebra and some others.

The Swift A-Frame bullet comes to mind.
Your .308 loaded with either 165 grain or better yet, 180 gr A-Frame bullet will break thick bones and penetrate well inside tough species.
Since even though it is a very tough and bonded bullet, the core is lead so, the A-Frame will reliably expand in smaller animals as well.

Regarding your .300 Winchester, that is one of the most popular cartridges for Africa’s so called “plains game”.
Since the large powder capacity .300 Magnum is available with several bullet options, both in live ammunition, as well as loose bullet heads for hand loading, you may as well use 200 grain or 220 grain bullets for Africa.
As always, I recommend the A-Frame bullet but, there are other brands of perfectly tough bullets, available in .300 Winchester Magnum cartridges as well.
Cheers.

Welcome to AH. As you’ve already discovered, a lot of people on here more than willing to help make your hunt come to fruition. The Search feature is a great help.
As others have stated, your .306 with a strong bullet of 165-180gr will handle just about any PG. Your .300 mag would be an even better choice but you stated it is a tactical rifle and might be a bit cumbersome to tote.
Don’t give up on the idea of a Big 5 animal. There are some affordable options.

Welcome!! You'll like it here!

Hi again Jager_Ivo,

I missed the sentence about your .300 being a “tactical” rifle.
With that, I presume it looks “Military” ?
If that is so, perhaps some countries might not let you bring it for hunting.
I do not know for sure but, I would not take the chance if it were me.

Presumably, your .308 is more of a traditional looking rifle for hunting.
That is the one I would bring or, you could do as I do and use the safari company’s rifle.
Either way, you will have so much fun when you visit Africa that, you will want to come back again and again.

Cheers,
Velo Dog.

308 win will be good for plains game. No question about it. Use premium bullet at least 180 grains (swift A frame, ttsx, or norma oryx).
With that, you will manage standard PG package, wildebeest blue and black, kudu, impala, oryx, warthog etc...

After first safari, you will be planning next safari. Then, you may want to consider a all around and DG.
Great allrounders are: 300 win mag, 338 win mag, European 9.3x62 (my choice based on availability of ammunition). 300 and 338 with a flatter trajectory. all round plains game rifle.

But in the realm of true allrounder with DG capability, then there is only 375 H&H.

So, if one day, you will be looking for specialized rifle, one gun battery, for multiple African trips.
It is 375 H&H.

For the type of rifle:
There are three types of opinion and taste on rifle choice on the forum:
1. Modern: Blaser R8
2. True classic: Mauser style rifle, take a look at older zkk and cz550 rifles, 2nd hand (or new mauser98 in 375)
3. Push feed: any other rifle, then above in 375 HH and similar caliber.

Something to think about.

In the meantime: pack the 308 win, find good ammo, and go for first taste of Africa!

I have to take exception to # 3. Push feed may be alright but for positive reliability go with controlled round feed in everything. Proven performance.

Hallo, vielen Dank.
