Happy New Year to you!

Now I have to ask, are there a lot of Jewish hunters out there? I just gifted my dad's .30-06 to my nephew. His father is Jewish (and a good guy) but he has no concept about hunting. Under Jewish law, my nephew is not Jewish, but still pretty close! We'll see if he becomes a hunter.

You are a good uncle regardless of the Jewish birth order. As far as other Jewish hunters i am not sure. I sure hope there are more out there!
Well there's Saul.
I inherited the .30-06 when my dad passed. I have another '06 as well as many other rifles that my own grandson will inherit, but he didn't know my father. My nephew did know his grandfather, so What thought it should go to him.

It he story of the rifle is that it was custom built in Germany just after WW II for a friend oh my father. In the late 50's he sold it to my dad. It is a beautiful Mauser with trim lines, a Schnabel fore end and a little engraving. It has express sights and a quick detach scope mount. The well-known gunsmith Ed Lapour good me that the mount was something special and I should make sure nothing happened to it. One of those guns you just love. I wanted my nephew to have his grandfather's rifle. He says he wants to kill feral hogs with it as they are destructive in the California environment where he lives.

Shana Tova and Happy New Year to all our Jewish fellow hunters.

And let’s all be immensely thankful for the greatest of all the old world Jewish gun makers- Simpsons of Suhl.

Hunter-Habib,

Although we've never met, I've read enough of your writings that I feel I know you a little and think of you on friendly terms. It makes me happy that you extended these greetings to our Jewish friends. I am not Jewish either, but I admire the people.

Doug, these people invented pastrami. Of course, they must be admired !

On a more serious note, when I was studying Environmental Management in the University of London (batch 1965)… my dorm was owned by a very loving Polish Jewish couple (The Schwartzes). They took care of me very well and I have many fond memories with them. On Eid day, they both took me out to dinner because I was away from my family. Mr. Schwartz often took me out to see local gun shops in London, during my free time. Mrs. Schwartz bought me my life’s first cheese burger from Wimpy in 1965 (which is even more heartwarming when you consider that cheese burgers aren’t Kosher since Jewish food laws prohibit the mixing of meat with milk).

Sometimes I sound like a very cranky old man when I say this, but I really do miss the good old days of my youth. As time progresses and the world is becoming more “Modern”, religious intolerance & conflict is only increasing rather than decreasing. The best that one can do on a personal level, is to promote religious harmony and camaraderie amongst our fellow man by leading through example.

P.S: The Quran in Islam actually considers Moses (the Jewish Prophet) to be one of our Prophets, as well.

Yes, Doug. Originally, the European (Romanian) Jews used goose breasts. But they switched to beef navels after immigrating to the United States.

I still use the original European Jewish recipe for making pastrami out of all the breasts of the bar headed geese and greylag geese that I hunt every wildfowling season.

I make venison pastrami but I never know this historical info.

Would you be willing to share the recipe?

Why can we not all get along like this. I am afraid I have never seen beef navels on the shelf. I will have to watch out I am starting to sound like John Lenon

The meateater recommends corning goose breasts and slicing them into pastrami since Canada Goose isn't the most flexible of ingredients. He has the brining/corning recipe in his cookbook, he may also have it on his website.

Absolutely, Datchew. Please don't hesitate to hit me up when you're free.

I deeply appreciate the kind words. In this time of great stress and growing hatred of Jews i take great relief in knowing that there are true friends out there. Never hesitate to reach out and say hello sometime
