I have been hunting since 1999 in both Switzerland and the US. Lately I have been focusing on red and roe deer as well as wild boar.

In the Swiss canton where I live, shots at large game must be made with at least a 7mm caliber rifle, and the distance must not exceed 250 m. Hence the .270 Win has become my preferred cartridge. I‘m using a fast twist(1:8.7) Steyr.

Welcome. Any idea if Switzerland will reopen Alpine Ibex?

Greetings alpinehuntsman,

Khomas Highland Hunting and Fishing Safaris of Namibia, welcomes you to the greatest forum on earth.

I look forward to your hunt reports and photos.

When you can spare a minute, I invite you to have a look into the Khomas Safaris website.

Best Regards,
Velo Dog.

The only canton that allowed hunters from outside of Switzerland to hunt ibex was Valais/Wallis. There’s talk Valais/Wallis may open up the hunt to them again, but I haven’t heard anything lately.

I hunted Alpine Ibex with a friend who was drawn in 2022, and I was drawn in 2023 for a 2.5 to 3.5 year old male in 2023. I put up some photos on Instagram (@alpinehuntsman) in case you’re interested. If you’d like to do some alpine hunting, a chamois is a more challenging hunt in my opinion.

I looked at your Instagram photos, those are great. I went for Chamois this year in Triglav NP in Slovenia. I agree that it's a challenging hunt, especially when you don't really have all the right equipment (boots, poles). But I will next time.

Welcome! Which canton do you reside at?

Switzerland is beautiful, have not made the journey there as of yet.Chamois would be lovely to hunt there.

Love your choice of calibre, i am a 270 fan also.

Good boots break or make your hunt. Slovenia is amazing, explored a lot of it as the Triglav but have not hunted as of yet. Did you end up getting a chamois?

Yes, but it was a small one. The guide wanted to go to the top, but said I would never make it in my boots. I told him let’s go to the trail head. We arrive and it was almost straight up and my ankles were going everywhere in my hiking boots. I looked at it and said there was not way I could make that with my boots and no poles. It was bad enough terrain for the one that I shot. We were walking across land slides, glacier moraines, etc, zero trails. Next time it’s mountaineering boots and poles. I have poles, but did not bring them as not on my packing list.

Welcome! Please excuse the engineer in the room, but if 7mm is the minimum bore size for big game, how are you able to use a .270?

In 13 African safari's and an equal number of North American hunts, BUZZ is the best guide I have ever hunted with.
