Got the good news I will be elk hunting this year

Well some good luck and then some bad for me. I missed a nice 300 inch 6x6 bull at 320 yds on the 3rd day. I just did not hold high enough and shot just under him. It is a long shot for a muzzlerloader but one I know I can do.

I way misjudged how rough this unit was as the bulls had left the cows and were up super high. We hiked some stuff that I hope to never see again.

We did have great luck the first day as we glassed up 3 bulls in the first 15 minutes. They gave us the slip but as we hiked back out a bull much bigger came over the mountain. It was behind us as we walked out. I knew it would take me to long to walk back so I told my friend who lives out there to go for it. He made the 800 yd hike back up some nasty rock slide and got to about 250 and made the shot. We started hiking at 6am and made it back to the truck at 8 pm with the elk on our backs.

He took a great bull that was getting away from hunters for the last 2 season. A few of his friends have pictures of him from the last two season and could not believe we got him down.

The goals was to get two chance at good bulls and we did taking one. I had also passed on a few smaller bulls during the hunt.

Nice bull, heavy with some character on the right G4.

Very nice bull for sure. I hope to see something like that in a few weeks in Montana.

Congrats to you and your friend on the hunt! What a great and unique bull!

Congrats. Nice bull and love that G-4 too.

Congrats Phil. Looks like a great hunt

Yikes! Quite a shot with a muzzleloader! Have to use open sights here in CO. And no sabots. Makes for a close dark timber hunt.
Fine trophy!

Here's a photo of Tony receiving that Shaw & Hunter award at the 1970 annual EAPHA Dinner Dance. Tony Dyer, then EAPHA President and Princess (Sunny) von Auersperg presented it. I also attended the event.
