Good Gun Deals This Week

Here’s a good deal this week and I’m pretty sure this is an AH member’s advert.

It’s a really nice Dakota Model 10 that has a lot of upgrades and is in arguably the most practical and desirable smallbore caliber, 7x57.

Upgrades I see: Color case hardened action. Exhibition wood. Drop points on the stock (teardrops). That’s roughly an $11,000 rifle new, plus it has a $3400 optic and $250 rings. I’ve hunted all over the world with a gun nearly identical to that one, taking everything from bear to deer, waterbuck to kudu, duikers to hyenas.

The reason it hasn’t sold? My hypothesis is human psychology. Someone would call it a deal if it had no scope and rings, then they’d run out and buy those two items separately for the same total price and call it a bargain because they wrote three separate checks for the same total price.

If you’ve never handled a Dakota 10, they are considerably more lively and svelte than a Ruger number 1 and these Dakotas are so comfortable to carry all day.
That is a spectacularly beautiful rifle, and I intrinsically trust your judgement that it is a good deal. And yes, I can verify that he is an AH member and a really great guy; i just did a deal with him this past week. Whoever gets this is going to do well indeed.

PS - I'm not sure if you caught this, but the optic is not included (however, the rings are).

I missed that part about the optic. Still a very nice gun for under MSRP without the wait for a Parkwest that will be worth less than an original Dakota.

Does not include the scope

Edit. I see you have been informed that the optic is not included. I’ve never owned one, but they are nice looking rifles.

Thoughts on this gun and price?

I think it’s overpriced. I’ve seen Merkel like that one from $5800-$8500. $11,000 is their ask and there are a number of nice guns at a similar price point.

The one thing it has going for it that may support higher numbers than those I cited is that it’s a 450-400 3”, probably the most sought after chambering for a double rifle at present.

Thanks. The caliber intrigued me. Along with the fact it is essentially brand new.

I’m likely a ways form purchasing a double rifle but trying to learn the market.

I’m not a big fan of cut-rate double rifles. Ten grand is a lot of money and buys a heck of a nice magazine rifle. It buys a very unremarkable double rifle.

You’d have to REALLY want that caliber.

At $9k vs $11k I would definitely rather have that Dakota 10 than the Merkel. All day long

I have a lot more double shotgun knowledge than double rifle knowledge. It’s hard for me to wrap my brain around a Merkel being cut rate regardless of price. I’ve owned a number of Merkel shotguns over the years and even the inexpensive ones were very well made and extremely durable. But that’s why I’m here to learn.

My Merkel double rifle was very accurate but when I tried to get a hold of Merkel for an issue, I was having.

I assumed they went out of business because the US rep could not even get an answer.

I spotted this over lunchtime today in the Gun Library of my local Cabelas in Allen, Texas; but somehow managed to control myself and not buy it (already having a few 7x57's and Featherweights does help a bit).

A very nice specimen of a New Haven made push-feed Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in 7mm Mauser. It has been fired, but appeared to be in otherwise Excellent condition; it even still has the factory "Walnut" sticker on the stock. Both the metal and wood looked near perfect; and the walnut has good figuring on both sides. Based on the serial number, I'm guessing probably early-mid 1980's production. Again, if I didn't already have a few close cousins of this rifle; it would have most likely come home with me. Perhaps another AH'er can make good use of it. :)
