Good Gun Deals This Week

505 Gibbs

I love how Epps are the only store in the country that has these kinds of rifles in stock. Where else can you buy a 505 Gibbs, 500 Jeffery or Nitro Express Rifle in Canada?

Someone needs to tell me why this isn’t a good deal.

Someone needs to tell me why this isn’t a good deal.

Lovely rifle, though I hate seeing a leather covered pad on one. Rather like brown shoes with a tuxedo. They were designed to facilitate the quick slide of a shotgun butt into the pocket of the shoulder while shooting driven game like pheasant and partridge. Rifles typically used a rubber pad not because of recoil, but to facilitate a secure positioning of the rifle through recoil. I assume this was an after market addition.

I thought I've seen a Heym 88 PH 500 NE several month back, but I did not realized it is the same rifle.

I'm sure the same thing happened at least twice with a 416 Rigby Kilimanjaro (sold last year). I figured that someone purchased it, took it for an african hunt than trade it back in.
I have been in the store today to pick up some bullets and the clerk told me it is not the same rifle that sold 6 month ago.
He knows the owner. It was not used much - never hunted with it; range shooting only.
I have not inspect it myself.
hi veritas
Do you get by this store often? Was wondering if you could check this gun out next time you’re there. Seems like a very good price- maybe too good. Thanks

Funny. I’m the opposite I think they are great it’s a selling point for me on this one. I get your point but shouldering a rifle quickly is a benefit to me and I’ve never had one slip.

Everything about a rifle should be personal. I was simply pointing out their origin and why they look odd on a rifle, particularly an English one, to me. Because clients want them, their isn't a custom gun maker that won't offer them. As my dear departed 10th generation South Carolinian mother would say in her lilting voice, "honey, there is just no accounting for taste."

Personally, I would add extra value to this good deal since it’s coming from Matt at MNR

I've been down this road/discussion before as well. I really like the leather covered pad on fine rifles and don't believe they are a hinderance in the field or concerning resale. They are commonly utilized, and recommended during consultation, by many bespoke builders. Some don't like them obviously. I accept my role as tasteless at the table. ;-)

Anyone here have an interest in a Blaser BD 14? .308/.22Hornet/20 ga. Selling it because after 19 months I got the 9.3 BD 14 I ordered. Just testing the waters. These are VERY difficult to find and it took 19 months to order a new one.(at least in 9.3 but that is very popular in Europe where these are made).

Hartmann & Weiss rifle for sale in Germany… auction, current price is $3k. Worth following if you have ever wanted one. (Obviously will go up but quite possibly a chance to buy at under market value).

Update: now at $4.2k.

Not very often. Just when I need to pick up staff I’ve ordered online.

But the Heym-88 500 NE has been already sold. Same for Jeffrey Farquharson 450/400 3-1/4"NE and the Cogswell & Harrison 375 H&H.

Note: as an afterthought, the next time I'll go up I'll list here what rifles they have on the shelf and give a heads up to our members should anybody wants me to review a particular firearm.

They do have two 9.3x64 Brenneke that are not listed under the "dangerous game" section for some mysterious reason. Steyr-Mannlicher and a Wilhelm M98.

I have my doubts about this one… the standing safety, but claw mounts for an optic (which is not provided), the replacement trigger, no pictures of the H&W engraved somewhere.. I’ve seen rifles being offered as H&W, which were only built on an action coming from H&W. The left/right hybrid. The very cheap looking black rubber buttpad. It does not seem to be original for sure.

Too many red flags in my head, I’d love to see more pictures.

@rookhawk any other thoughts?

I’d need a lot more info and so should any other buyer. A lot of guns sold as H&W are actually guns made by people that TRAINED at H&W.

I assure you, if I worked at Ferrari for a week as a coffee intern the cars I make in my home garage are slightly lower quality. You. Get the point.

If it’s real and someone likes it, it needs to go back to hw to get a safety and optic sorted out, a full factory refurbish, etc.

Thank you for your response. I’m not surprised it was sold. Thanks for offering to keep us posted

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]

Out of all the different color variations of Impala the black Impala just stands out with its beautiful pitch black hide.

Impala is one of the animals you will see all over Africa.
You can see them in herds of a 100 plus together.

This excellent ram was taken with one of our previous client this past season.
