American Hunter Killed in Uganda

Tragic. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Thoughts and prayers for the family and wishes of a speedy recovery for all affected.

Horrible to hear, prayers for the man's family. I hope the PH is able to recover.

My condolences and prayers to family and friends.

Has anyone notice that they do not mention the presence of any profesional hunter in the accident?

I beleive Uganda doesnt request nothing else than a hunting license and permission from the local community to hunt their land. Is just an observation and maybe I am wrong, but looks like these hunters had only a guide, but not a PH with them

Terrible news. Prayers for all who were injured for a quick and full recovery. Prayers and condolences to the family of Mr. Cox, may the hand of God provide peace and comfort during these terrible times. very sad.

It’s terrible and my thoughts are with the family. There is an element of risk in most things travel included. I guess we just have to pursue life and live it to the fullest.

here is in media news:

The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has expressed deep regret following the tragic passing of Mr. Frank Stuart Cox, an American sport hunter, during a scheduled hunting expedition in the Karenga Community Wildlife Area (KCWA) on February 3, 2025.

In the afternoon of the incident, Mr. Cox, accompanied by fellow American hunter Mr. Trappe Mini Rudolf Francis, a UWA ranger, and a Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) officer, encountered a group of five buffaloes. In the course of the hunt, one buffalo was shot but managed to retreat into a nearby thicket. Tragically, upon being located once more, the buffalo charged at the group, fatally goring Mr. Cox and seriously injuring Mr. Trappe.

“Emergency response teams were deployed immediately, and both victims were transported to the Kidepo National Park airstrip in preparation for airlifting to Kampala. Despite these rapid efforts, Mr. Cox succumbed to his injuries before the aircraft’s arrival. Mr. Trappe was successfully airlifted to Kampala for further medical attention, where he is currently receiving care.” Part of the Statement reads.

The incident has been reported to the police in Karenga, and investigations into the unfortunate circumstances are ongoing. The remains of the deceased have been transferred to Mulago Hospital City Mortuary for post-mortem examination.

UWA has conveyed heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Cox, emphasizing their commitment to safety in wildlife activities. The authority also wishes Mr. Trappe a swift and full recovery.

The Karenga Community Wildlife Area is a vital conservation zone located adjacent to Kidepo Valley National Park in the Karenga District. Managed by local communities in collaboration with the Karenga District Local Government and Uganda Wildlife Safaris, the area serves as a crucial buffer zone for wildlife dispersal and sustainable utilization. It is home to a diverse range of wildlife species, including buffaloes, antelopes, elephants, and big cats, and offers opportunities for regulated activities such as sport hunting and ecotourism.

Quick recovery to the wounded.
Condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Cox.

Stay safe out there gentlemen.

I’m pretty much sure a PH is required ?
“”
  • Legal Requirement:
The Ugandan government regulates hunting and requires the presence of a professional hunter to ensure ethical and sustainable hunting practices.

  • Safety and Expertise:
Professional hunters possess the necessary skills, knowledge, and experience to navigate the terrain, track animals, and ensure safety during the hunt.

  • Ethical Hunting:
Professional hunters are trained to adhere to ethical hunting practices, including ensuring fair chase and responsible trophy selection.

  • But I also might be wrong, seems like only three operations have hunting privileges in Uganda and they probably work together, however maybe they where hunting with a government agency or official??

In Uganda you can only hunt with a valid Ugandan hunting permit, together with a Uganda-licensed Professional Hunter, within a hunting Concessionaire's Government-approved Hunting Area and under supervision of a Uganda Wildlife Authority's Ranger.

It's very sad. Condolences to the family and friends.

Is it know what type of weapon they used? Were these double rifles or bolt action rifles? In what calibers?
Caliber and rifle type are irrelavent when the bullets dont go where they are supposed to. Must have been a close encouter...

Here is the official report from UWS.

What a tragedy. Hopefully the PH makes a speedy recovery. Condolences to the family of the hunter. At 78 years old and a pacemaker it’s awesome that he was able to still get out and hunt. Don’t mean to be insensitive with the following but I can think of worse ways to die. Better than dying in a nursing home IMO

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]

Out of all the different color variations of Impala the black Impala just stands out with its beautiful pitch black hide.

Impala is one of the animals you will see all over Africa.
You can see them in herds of a 100 plus together.

This excellent ram was taken with one of our previous client this past season.
