Good Gun Deals This Week

Two have caught my eye recently, but I think that both are over-priced.

The first is a Farquharson take-down by Thomas Bland in .360 No. 2, with an estimate of £7,000 - £9,000 and a 30% commission. The UK police consider this an obsolete calibre, so anyone off the street can buy it, but Kynoch can sell you ammunition for it. One other point to bear in mind, perhaps, is that (because of a below-legal minimum muzzle velocity, although there is plenty of muzzle energy) it would be illegal to use on red deer in Scotland.

The second is an A-Square Hannibal in .416 Rigby, with an €1,800 - €2,000 estimate. This seems to have suffered from the usual Gallic distaste for cleanliness, but should polish up reasonably nicely. It may be that various screws are missing. Another problem is the difficulty of buying firearms in France nowadays - all the purchases have to routed through a gun dealer, which is not an insurmountable problem, but adds to the general aggravation. I'd expect this to go for under or low estimate, should any American reader be willing to take the plunge.

10k? What am I missing on this one besides harder to find ammo?
Nothing. My comment was strictly about the poor effort by whoever wrote the description. Only thing I noticed was no pics of the water table, bores, or an open action, but those could probably be acquired with a phone call. Looks like a pretty good price, if everything is solid.

Also: check that it is tight on face (it almost certainly is), does it have disc set strikers, is the extractor in good order, who has tarted the rifle up and when, details of provenance, details of load and regulation (with a target, if possible), details of proof. Most important is the condition of the bores at the throat of the barrel and any 'cordite burn'.

Note that it is an extractor, not an ejector.

Try to get a longer period than three days to look over the rifle and shoot it. You may be able to beat the price down a bit on the basis of extractor-not-ejector and unusual calibre. Try to get a warranty.

On the plus side, the rifle has depreciated to a point where the previous owner(s) have borne all the depreciation and you - or any other purchaser - should not lose any money on it over the course of ownership.

If you are fortunate, you have found a rifle that someone has spent a lot of money on and had the recommissioning work done properly. If you are unlucky, you run the risk of buying a pig in a poke.

I don’t know anything about BBK, but that wood alone is worth the asking price!
It is pretty! I believe the BBK action was made by a gentleman by the last name Bauska(?). I think the 404 Jeffery in the classifieds is the same action

The 375 flanged and the 9.3x74 are almost identical ballistics wise. 375 300gr at 2400 and my loads for my 9.3 chapuis are 300gr aframe at 2385. and Factory's are 286gr at 2380.

Morning Rob, Any feeling for how the 300 H&H shoots? How's the barrel condition?

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
